Don't think this really fits into any of the other threads so hopefully ok with creating a new one for this...
Am considering getting a myki when my monthly metcard expires in a couple of weeks. Can someone tell me whether you get free weekend zone 2 travel on a zone 1 myki pass as you do with metcard?

No you won't.
Unless you're on a tram :p
If you have a zone 1 pass you'll also need a quota of myki money to cover zone 2.

Then I DEFINITELY won't be getting a Myki... this absolutely sucks! My brother lives in Zone 2 and it's been fantastic being able to head down to his place without paying any extra... not to mention the little tiki tour I took out to Lilydale & Belgrave last weekend because I had to fill in some time between seeing a house in Glen Iris & one near Jolimont
Not impressed that that's been swept under the mat. I probably venture into Zone 2 at least every second weekend using my Zone 1 monthly, and it would all start to add up.

I think if it is a 28 day Myki pass (which is the same as a monthly) you get free Zone 2 travel. Not 100% sure on that - I'd have to look up the guff we got given when I am at work next.
The mace was not stolen but taken from Parliament by some 'festive cusses' for a lark, and is even now so it is stated, in a bawdy-house in Melbourne, where it has been, so it is said, used in low travesties of Parliamentary procedure...
And yes, these are my opinions and not my employers (just in case there's someone really stupid browsing)

Nothing in the Fares and Ticketing manual on that:
http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/assets/PDFs/2009-Fares-and-Ticketing-Manual/myki/Pages-from-MYKI-Ticketing-manual-ch5.pdf
Only that you'll require extra Myki money to cover the zone difference.
However with the new flexible pass scheme (you can pick the number of days from 28-365) it may work out cheaper for many Myki pass users than the current Metcard pricing.

Wait, if you have a Zone 1 monthly you get free weekend travel in Zone 2? I didn't know that!

One of the real benefits of Myki (especially for non frequent users) is that you get the cheapest fare by default.

Myki passes are valid for the zones purchased - there are no 'out of zone' benefits provided on weekends. The reason for this is that myki is a statewide system - if you give Zone 1 users free travel in Zone 2 on weekends, then what do you give the person with a Zone 5 ticket? It is one integrated system, with the same rules.
HOWEVER, the weekend fare caps apply. So if you have a Zone 1 Full Fare Pass and you travel out to Zone 2 on weekends, then you'll be charged 6 cents (the difference between the Zone 1 2-hour ticket and the $3 weekend cap).
If you travel from Melbourne to Geelong, then again you will get a cheaper fare than you do at present because we count the existing pass towards your additional travel. So it discounts regional travel for pass holders in the metropolitan area (or discounts travel to Melbourne for people who have passes for travel on buses in Geelong, Ballarat, etc..).

Only with a Metcard monthly and not with a MYKI pass, that why I stay with a metcard because it works out cheaper for me at the moment.

I am not sure. Seriously. I worry about travel from Shepparton to the City and then on to Belgrave or Bentleigh, or where-ever...
