This is the stupidest thread I have ever seen on RP.   Hitachis, whilst not in great quantity, run every weekday during peak at least and I see them every day I use the system which is 5 or 6 times a week.

Hitachi encounters really are not rare enough to get excited about, much less post about.  I actually caught one from Middle Brighton to FSS twice last week.
"Mr. Lane"

When this thread started, I think there were some thoughts that they might not last until the Commonwealth Games, at least not all of them.

However, they will, and I've even heard that they might get some refurbishment and last until new trains are obtained in four years time.

There has indeed been some serious discussion about keeping the 6 x 6 car Hitachi's to ensure Connex have sufficient rolling stock to meet the new services demands to be announced in April.

Remember that after THE Games Connex will announce a twenty minute OFF PEAK service on most lines.

To keep the Hitachis going they will need PA's, CCTV, emergency lighting and possibly airconditioning.

Services are already every 20 minutes off-peak or better on all lines except the extremities of some.

Or do you mean reverting from a 30 to a 20 min night time frequency (as was provided in the 1970s)?

Saw all 6 today. Also i was lucky enough to ride Hitachi 129M and co from Hoppers Crossing to Werribee, then Werribee to Flinders Street (it then went out of service for a few hours) and then the same set again on the 4:01 Upfield which i got with some of my m8's to Royal Park. So, overall i had a good Hitachi spotting day today. Laughing

PS, i also hope that Hitachi's do stay till the new trains get here like John Of Melbourne said.

Fair enough, and god I hope so.  Another 4 years of Hitachi would be awsome.  God I love those trains, epecially when going through the loop at speed.   I do wish they were refurbished (all of them) as I will miss the sound of wheel on track and passing over points thought the open windows.   Modern sealed up trains just have no charm.

If they are refurbished, I very much doubt they will get air con, but thats the way I like it.

Everyone must pray tonight for the long life of the remaining Hitachi's, together we can will this into happening.

Are there currently any Hitachi'sthat are stored and operational with a bit of Maintenance? If so, Will we see these in operation for the Commonwealth Games?

Just thought I'd mention that I saw a 6-car set at Sydenham/Watergardens station the past two mornings, today was 81M at the far end, but I missed the rest of the consit, and missed it at the actual station...  Evil or Very Mad

Anyways, looks like the Hitachi's have a tiny little bit more life, especially if there's a set running an 8am, Tuesday morning service!  Smile

Considering the flogging the ex M>Train Comengs were (are) getting, they'll need replacing sooner than latter.

The new services won't require that many extra trains.  With the extra Siemens trains that have now been brought into service, the Silvers wouldn't be needed simply for that.

Remember that after THE Games Connex will announce a twenty minute OFF PEAK service on most lines.
"N466"
How can I "remember" something I never knew in the first place?

Off peak services will not be changing after the Games.  The only changes this year will be a handful of extra peak services and some other alterations to allow for RFR services.

I don't know if there are any stored, but if so they won't be used for the Commonwealth Games.

Here's a few photos of another Hitachi set in "Sydenham Yard" this morning, with 9M and 233M in the middle. I couldn't quite read the number of the front M though...

I rode a Hitachi home today! It was the 15:18 DOWN Epping, and was formed by 3M-1981T-197M-M-T-M.

This would have formed, and will subsequently form the 4.11 UP at Epping, the 4.53 DOWN Greensborough at FSS, the 5.46 UP from Greensborough, the 6.28 DOWN Epping, where it will stable for the night after arriving at 7.16.
