Do military personnel travel in the crew car with the train, or do they have road support/backup vehicles, to guard their cargo ?

Appears they travel in the crew car to keep an eye on things, bobcarey.
More info here about the crew car:

Late running freight from down south (4AD1?) into Alice Springs this morning, into the yard at around 0640.
May stay in the yard until 4DA8 arrives this morning then run north.

Maybe 705 is lurking in Alice yard, I'll go for a look today & see if its here.
Not known whats on 4DA8 for the run south, came into town yesterday at around 0835 with NR74 & AN3 in the lead.
Did 4AD8 leave Adelaide with one or two locos?
5DA2 into Alice Springs this morning at around 0710
