The VL would be VL351 and the train number would have been 7DA2. I saw them arriving in Darwin on Friday night on my way to BMX racing at Palmerston.

most of the freightlink trains from Darwin to Adelaide leave Alice early mornings between 0430-0700hrs Wed-Sun. from Adelaide to Darwin most come in at late night Tue-Sat between 2000-0200hrs the only freight train that comes into alice is the sunday arvo train which comes in from 1500-1700hrs. Also the Ghan arrives in alice 4 time a week both from Adelaide & Darwin. Sunday it arrivals at 1100hr and depart 1530hrs, Monday Arrivals 1345hrs & depart 1800hrs and thursday there is two Ghan the 1st arrival at 0900hrs & Depart 1245hrs. then 2nd arrivals at 1345hrs & depart at 1800hrs both of the Ghan crossover at roe creek which in about 30kms south of alice springs at about 1315hrs hope this guide helps you while you are up here. sometime you might get a really late freight train that might come throught the middle of the day if lucky.
