Anti-nuclear campaigners have warned the Alice Springs Town Council against a plan to increase the amount of radioactive material freighted on the Adelaide to Darwin railway.

The Olympic Dam mine in South Australia has applied to increase the amount of uranium it transports on the line, as well as radioactive copper concentrate.

Dave Sweeney from the Australian Conservation Foundation says the plan would see hundreds of train-loads of radioactive material pass through Alice Springs every year.

He says the risk of a train accident makes the proposal a direct concern for Alice Springs' municipal authorities.

"Because you can be sure if a train goes off the rails it won't be bureaucrats in Canberra, and it won't be Darwin and it won't certainly be the board of BHP flying in to clean things up," he said.

"It will be Alice Springs firies. It will be Alice Springs health and hospital workers. It will be Alice Springs coppers."

Yawn.

Most of the cone smoking drum playing sandal wearers that carry on about the uranium mine don't even live here nor contribute to this towns' future.

I'm all for it, can't wait for the mine to start. The town needs something more than welfare & tourism to make it run.

if people learn how to drive motor vechiles right here in Alice Springs and obey the Road rule for Level Crossing maybe then there won' ta be as mush problems with near miss or accidents. There is the a small chance of a derailment by the extreme heat that could buckle the line eg like the Katherine derailment last week but i think it be safer by rail then road.

From the photos last week of the derailment, the containers stayed upright and it appears that none actually fell over.

Proper containers built for the task that are "burstproof" would be the shot.

Before we all excited about the extra work possibilities for the town theres a couple of things that have to be addressed:

Arrow The lack of accomodation in the town. Prices here have taken off for accomodation(I own a 2 bedroom unit and I get $290/week for that, wasn't even vacant for a night)

Arrow Someone needs to buy the uranium. Following the hiccups on the financial scene, the prospective owners need to weigh up the profit and demand for uranium as against the cost of mining, processing & transport.

Arrow Need to find the people to work there. theres a slow exodus of people from here to the mining industry so you have to find tradesmen and support staff to make it tick.

For the time being, we'll just stand back & see how it all pans out.

I would have thought having this stuff on trains was far safer and environmentally friendly than having a lot of these trucks on the road running through towns.

What do these peanuts want from mining companies? They have to export, so the best way to do this is to use rail.

Regards,
Brian

Firstly, to reduce risk of collisions at level crossings, when U08 trains operate, four quadrant gates should close 30 minutes before train is due.

Secondly, at least one level crossing should be replaced with overbridge.

Thirdly, one or other of the remaining level crossings should be closed.

Do they expect a nuclear explosion if a train derails? Rolling Eyes

Could cause the 3 eyed 600 pound hamsters to come running through the scrub starting a dust storm. Wink

Yep, they sneak lineside and jump onto the spare flat wagons on the AD1 services, then jump off near Pine Gap, into the underground submarine tunnel and re-appear north of town Laughing

I think a rainwater tank would be an ideal suit of armour if a cluster of these came at you.
