G1, SMC/NJAB1, NC1, GM1, ETSA 1. One more (hint: it's in NT).

3 more numbers, 7 locos.

Surely this Question isn't that hard Shocked.

2 of the numbers are single digit, the other is double. Each of these numbers only has 2 locos with that numbers. There is one "1" left.

Ok then I'll add a few more Very Happy .

How could we forget Na 1 (Sandfly, Darwin).

CB1 (NRM) - Do railcars count?

MDH1 F.J.Shea (now ETSA 2, Homestead Park Pt Augusta), then to match the ETSA number GM2 (NRM)

Nf5 (Pine Creek, formerly W53) and Rx5 (Kapunda), and then to match the SAR number NSU 53, GPS Alice Springs.

Nf6 (In Darwin Harbour, formerly W54) and NDH6 (Adelaide River, once again if railcars count) and then to match the SAR number NSU 54 PRR.

Rx 55 (Loxton) and NSU 55 (Steamtown).

I'm sure there must be more...

You've covered all but one that I was thinking of. But I can understand that some people might not agree ... GM3 and BHP No. 3. GM3 you could argue is preserved in a similar way to GM 1.

Go for it lustychant, your question.

If railcars count there is at least two more -

402 (Zig Zag) and 402 (Redhen at South Gippsland Railway I think).

409 (NRM) and 409 (Redhen at Riverton).

To be fair two steam locos currently based in South Australia have still yet to be identified (Although one is STC).

Thanks simont141 for such a good original question and for giving me an opportunity to ask a question, however since we all missed this obvious one (including me until 30 seconds ago Cool ) I think it would only be fair if whoever can guess it should ask the next question. You said you weren't counting ST locos, however because the loco has spent more time in SA than on the Silverton metals it would be good if it could be included Cool .

As for the WAGR W's they'll only ever be imports Very Happy

Anyway here's a hint - one of the loco's is operational, one is not. I'm sure simont141 if taking into account Silverton loco's would have listed it.

OK then, here's an interesting question (s) -

1 - What government system other than the SAR has had the greatest number of individual locos to travel over the SAR Broad Gauge.

2 - What was the class with greatest number of individual units to travel over the SAR BG.

1- Victorian Railways.

2- The A2 class had the most members, and would have run into both Mt Gambier, and Servicton.

Just to clear something up, both questions relate to true 'foreign' locos.

I wasn't trying to be too tricky with this one Cool and to be fair to Alco_Haulic I didn't consider Mt Gambier (or Pinnaroo) when considering the question. Did the A2's ever work to Mt Gambier or was their axle load too high for the Dartmoor Bridge? If we then considered that area VR-V/line would be the winner including (at least) the D/K/J steam and T/Y DE's. I was considering locos that travelled a reasonable distance in SA.

As for Question 1,

VR - X (10), C (10), G (10?), N (25), S (17), B (11), A (11) plus DD (superheater trials in 1918), N432? (Jubilee Train 1951), K190, R761, R766

Total - 99

One system, if you agree with the figures above, had 120 (99% sure). Exclamation edit Exclamation between 120 and 160.

Second (and I stand to be corrected on this Confused , in fact I welcome your help with both this and the previous answer Smile ) had 109.

Third - VR-V/line with 99.

Forth place had 53.

It's difficult to find out this info so please cut me some slack with this question Very Happy .

As for question 2, it's not a VR-V/Line class Cool

There's the trick - Q2 should have been a little clearer - it relates to Q1. Sad

Apologies GrahamJ Embarassed .

As the trivia thread had been a bit stagnant I hastily posted a question without really 're-reading' it. Apologies to all if there was any confusion.

As I said earlier, to find out this info is difficult so I will need some help from everyone to ensure the answers are accurate. If I am wrong at all please let me know Cool .

Well, its been a week and either no one cares, the question was a bit ambiguous (my fault Embarassed ) or we need a few hints.

The government system with the least amount of locos to traverse the SA Broad Gauge is NSW, with the grand total of one - 42220.

I hope this may help with the answers Cool .

I'll try for the Commonwealth Railways (CR) as a far percentage of their locos would have been transferred via the SAR BG (delivery runs)

Cheers,
Tony
On the road again, it's my yearly "paid holiday" time again! Very Happy
