Adelaide Station Saved

The Adelaide City council has rejected Skycitys plan to put large external metal balconies on two levels of the Railway Station building. It very nearly got thru, the State Government has said it was ok, and it was only in the council that it was stopped and only by a slim number of votes. one that voted "yes" was the Lord Mayor.

Considering the station is a mutant of its former self, I find it quite concerning that the heritage face of the building came so close to further destruction.

Eh....wouldn't of surprised me.  Adelaide seems to want to hide it's train network away from the public eye.....

...which, comparing it to other cities, is probably justified.

Great news, but any chance that we can get the Casino to move out of the station?

Thanks

What's next? Excursion trains out of Adelaide station? They seem to be a thing of the past with the access issues of late.

TA trains denied rail acces to Adelaide Station...

Don't laugh, it might happen, after all this is Adelaide! (Take a look at the airport for an example)

Don't be stupid. TA practically owns the infrastructure and I doubt it would ban it's self. Can you possibly foresee an actual scenario?

It sounds like a great idea to kick the Casino out of the railway station. They can go and build something similar to what they stuck up in Auckland. If we started a campaign to get them out, what would you advocate goes in its place? The National Railway Museum has its rightful place in the Port, but what about moving the Tram Museum to the City? (Pending the outcome of the Election) In a few months time it will be possible to offer patrons a 24km round trip novelty tram excursion!

Any other ideas?

I'll second that 409 and lets make sure that there is at least a couple of spare platforms for a future Barossa train.  Very Happy

Thanks

We do not have any spare platforms as it is, admittedly they are not used very well, but they are all in continuous use.

As for removing the casino, a fine idea, but the Government rakes in more money from the casino PA than it ever will a railway, economics says that it will stay.

If it were to go, what would you propose to fill the rather large void in our station with?

A very pertinent point, Aaron.

Moreover, there will never be any extra space available to build more platforms.

The only solution for this is to construct platforms west of the Morphett St Bridge,  on the north boundary of the railyards. In other words, beside the Torrens Riverbank.

That space of course being where the Overland fleet was once stabled.

Which still places lazy people too far from Adelaide...

Which means some form of shuttle service, which means that we may as leave Keswick as it is, and leave Adelaide as it is...

Adelaide station could have & should have been converted to accomidation wether it be budget or hotel style and the coach terminal added to the station.

This would work well and be a central location for many visitors to stay and have immeadiate access to the rail system.
  409 Minister for Railways

I like the sound of that idea (I really do) but I don't think that many people would have enjoyed hearing trains coming in and going out under the floors all the time during the night.

There's a YHA next to platform 1 at Sydney's Central station and I hear that a hotel is being built in St Pancreas station in London.

Thanks

It wouldnt be that bad with the trains undercover and the noise muffled a bit, plus plenty of hotels are in noisy areas worse than Adelaide station.

I am the bearer of Bad News, Sky city has been given permission to builds its WW2 fortification looking balconies for the smokers.

Im getting sick of this states view on heritage, not only this but the brick building that was the Victoria Square Tram Bahn is to be demolished for a building that is as questionable as the Commonwealth Law Courts.
  409 Minister for Railways

You have got to be kidding, I thought that they had been knocked back with the balcony.

I belive most of the council are against it, so I don't understand how this has happened, I know lets make Town Hall look modern and coat it with metal panels as was Beehive corner not so long ago....... Oh and lets replace the GPOs clock with a digital face..... Evil or Very MadEvil or Very MadEvil or Very MadEvil or Very Mad
  409 Minister for Railways

Or remove the clocks altogether and put them in the old Port Pirie (Ellen Street) station some 120 years too late.

Doesn't Casino = hotel+pokies+gaming floor?

All the other casinos around Australia I can think of, are all hotels

I'm with you guys. Too late for that now unfortunately. I visited the Casino last weekend for the first time in several years and I gotta say I was shocked. What a sh*!thole! A sad, inglorious fate for a beautiful building that once played such an important role in South Australia's development Crying or Very sad
