A shame.

I would have liked to see it preserved in a museum.

I had a dream not long ago about it... running the Alamein shuttles.

It'd probably be more reliable with an A pulling it along anyways!  RazzLaughing

When was the last time the 4D actually ran a pax service?

Do not know or care.  Rode on the piece of s**t for years out Lilydale way - horrible, uncomfortable, slow thing. I understand epople wanting to preserve it, but for me - good riddance to bad rubbish.

I think it was back in 2001.

I remember in year 7 ('99) i would always see it heading to Blackburn about 7:45 every morning between Chatham and Surrey Hills.

Then, maybe in 2000, they made it run a little earlier, and it formed the 7:45 train out of Surrey Hills - my train!

It was a good way to start the school day... Though it didnt run a full 5 day service - some days we got a Hitachi, or a Comeng, or nothing at all.

That just shows how "reliable" the dam thing was then doesn't it! No wonder Connex wants it gone & no longer there concern!

Would make a good house...

Didn't it have "for the Olympic Games or something."

Theyd buy the trains, if we got the games...  Very Happy

Ah, well...

An end to the 4D.

Perhaps we could put the aircon on a Hitachi... (I know they did it a whiled ago)

It made a brief reapearance in service during 2002 sometime. I beleive it was pulled out of service at Lilydale one day where it languished for a while, then was moved to Ringwood, then Bayswater before ending up in Newport by early 2003, where it has been ever since. By the way has anyone else noticed the 4D aircon unit still hanging around Bayswater? It was still there two weeks ago.

The 4D is basically a comeng in a tangara body.

- r707

Consistently the most ridiculous thing posted on this forum.

- Mr. Lane

I have seen this come up a few times too.. now I don't know what the story is but personally I doubt this. The last time I rode the 4D was around '96/'97, so my memories of it aren't crystal clear, however I'm sure it sounded, felt and rode absolutely nothing like a Comeng. I always thought it was just a Sydney Tangara modified to suit Melbourne's rail system.

I still remember my first ride in the 4D and how weird it felt, especially in the lower level, where you would be looking out the window and the platform would be at eye level where you would be looking at everyone's feet, you could even see up women's skirts lol!!

It's a shame to see it go like that though... A nice modern train scrapped after such a short time.

Just out of curiosity, will they be leaving a carriage intact for the williamstown museum?

Why do you ask a question for which you alredy know the answer? Indeed, it was mad, with all the breaking down it did. Clearly insane.

From what I saw on the SRV/707 Ops Open Day, it looked like it'd be heading to Sims Metal...  Surprised

It's just an assumption, because it is being stripped...

Sort of like Sydney's Tangara's, with a number of differences.

Apperance wise, basically the same.

Wow, we had double Decker trains in one time I never knew that (how cool!). Will they ever bring them back? Why did they stop using it?

It has been reported that as of November 2005 the 4D has been purchased by RailCorp for its operations in New South Wales.

It is rumoured that when it is delivered to New South Wales it will be modified and used for local services between Newcastle and Morisset and some Blue Mountains Intercity services.
