Just wear a railfan related shirt or an "I Love Australia" shirt and you'll be right!

just before a few of us head over for a holiday (and to come to some of the train events)
can the NSW people tell us what is the correct way / procedure for taking shots of trains at central
who do we see (station master or security guards)
and any other useful information
**and yes, i did a search, but there is no information from the last few weeks, just want to make sure nothing new has come in**
cheers

No tripods, no video cameras. You cannot be stopped with a still camera.
If you are questioned by security with a still camera, ask them to check with their masters, if you are polite, they will be polite and not bother you.
If you intend using a tripod or video, check with the station master.

Only because tripods may be consuidered an obstruction, and video is considered as potentially for professional use or broadcast (and still photos aren't?).
Same rules apply - no permission normally required, just the courtesy of asking first and respecting the opinion of individuals who might prefer not to be in your shot.
If you do intend to shoot still or moving pics for financial gain or as part of your business then you would require written permission first, or at least prior to publication.

BS | I agree BS, however I do agree that tripods may get in the way.
I've had no problem videoing at Central.
Now if RailCorp could just introduce a viewing platform.

They have, every platform is a viewing platform.

I agree, I've used the small MiniDV handycam once coming into Central on the train, and going out of it. Also used it at Hurstville (to get 3801) and nobody really cared.
Granted I wasn't loitering about all day, and I certainly wasn't presenting an OH&S risk, or poking around where I shouldn't.

This is simply not true. You do not need permission to take photos.
| Sera wrote: | So the moral of my tale is that it's a good idea to check in with the station master beforehand. |
No, it's a good idea to inform the SM what you intend to do so there is no misunderstanding, but you do not need permission for non-commercial photography.

I had a similar experience at Liverpool after the Model Railway Exhibition in 2004, when a station assistant approached me quite politely to speak to the Station Master after I had photographed an incoming train.
I explained, equally politely, that I was just filling in time until I caught the next city-bound train, and politely declined her offer to speak to the station master, since the train I was waiting for was due.
This caused her some concern, since it was clear to me then that they wanted to know who I was and why I was taking photos.
I had been approached, about the same period, by Transit Officers at Central, suggesting that photography was not permitted, but following the Rail 150 celebrations there has been no such concern. I guess that most Transit Officers based at Central now realise that taking train photographs is not such a minority interest and that CityRail is happy to make a buck out of the interest.

But what happens if staff come up to you and are so insitant as to call a TO or try to fine you? It's all good to say "Say No" but it's not allways that easy

Carry a copy of the Minister's statement in Hansard.
