Anyone here Dr Who fans?
I like it. And there was a thread in NSW that went a bit haywire about Dr Who, so I'll start a new one here...

Adric: So what is a railway station?
The Doctor: Well, a place where one embarks and disembarks from compartments on wheels drawn along these tracks by a steam engine - rarely on time. Under 16 years old. No longer a member.

Yeah! Count me in!

But wait a few moments while I view "An Unearthly Child" again!

My favourite story of the early seasons was "The Keys of Marinus", especially the middle episodes where there were vines creeping over and around stone walls. The idol guarding the entrance to the building was also spooky. It's also of interest to note that a year or so earlier, Carole Ann Ford had appeared in "The Day of the Triffids" fighting vines!

Electra, I couldn't agree more ... of the CE episodes, An Unearthly Child was a standout. Of the "classic" series (to use the BBC description), The Keys of Marinus was an excellent string of stories, but my absolute favourites would have to be "The Sensorites" (WH), and "The War Games" (PT). Very Happy

William Hartnell remains my favourite Doctor overall.

Great program. After Tom Baker though the Doctors got a little boring IMHO as did some of the storylines.

My two best stories were The Sunmakers (1978, Tom Baker with Leela, who was the best companion without doubt), and The Time Meddler (1964, William Hartnell).

I would have to say that the 1st and 3rd Doctors were my favourite. I also felt the earlier stories were better, later on the stories became more vague and the plots hung by a thin thread. Too many Tom Baker era stories spend 3 episodes building up a climax, then suddenly everything comes together in the 4th episode, though with little jusification or reality. In the 60's, there was actually more scientfic basis to the stories, and the fail old Hartnell (and later the not so fail Troughton) had to use wit to defeat his/their opponents.

I will never forget when Nero demands Hartnells Doctor, who he mistakes for the court composer, play a piece of music on the harp. The Doctor had no idea how to play the harp, so he devises a trick: he tells the members of the court that the piece he is about to play is so perfect that only those with a ear for music will even be able to hear it: and so he *pretends to play*...of course no one hears anything, but no one is willing to admit that they cant hear anything, so everyone just plays along and pretends they can hear to avoid being embarrased! Needless to say the Doctor gets away with it.

Troughtons Doctor used to fool his opponents into thinking he was a dimwit, only for him to make his move when they were unsuspecting.

The show lost that witty aspect in the 70's, in particular in the Baker era. Pertwee was a master of martial arts, so thats how he got out of his tricky scrapes, but Baker was just unpredictable, and there was no explanation half the time for how exactly he saved the day. He often did pretend to be a fool, but it was so over the top that his opponents knew he was trying it on: City of Death for example: COUNTESS: "Doctor, who sent you?" DOCTOR: "Who sent me what?"

The 5th Doctor was nice, and I didnt dislike him, but he was my least favourite. I thought Colin Baker was an excellent portrayal, but it seems most people didnt. I think thats a shame, cause he said he wanted to become the longest serving Doctor, and I thought he would have been great.

McCoy I think was underrated. I really liked that era both for the Doctor, the refreshing stories and the companions.

McGann, who did the 1996 movie and would have been the Doctor in the planned FOX series has alot of potential, as did the series in general, but the movie was show at the wrong time in the US and so nothing came of a series. McGann really portrayed a typical 19th centry englishman Doctor, and the big budget and fresh ideas would have made a top notch series: it wasnt to be.

The 2005 series I didnt have much expectations for, but it actually supassed everything i expected. There was a little too much family crap for my liking and I would like them to take a story away from earth (wholw series was on Earth pretty much), but otherwise it gets full marks from me. Pity the Doctor left after one series.

Also, Daleks flying through space....what is that. Rolling Eyes

Mr Lang, you may already know, but Cybermen are back next season. The pics on the web look pretty good, but it doesn't look right. I'll try and find a pic.

Regarding "The War Games" (1969), the 10-parter that was Patrick Troughton's last story:

Patrick's son appeared in it.

Edward Brayshaw, who played a renegade Time Lord operating as the War Chief, not only 'disappeared' during the final episode, but had his face made up looking like that of the 'Master', a character not introduced to the program until a couple of years later.

Or was I just imagining it?

I vaguely recall at the time I watched it thinking maybe that was the character The Master was based on ... haven't seen it in a while though, and even then, only once, but it was a great story deserving of all 10 episodes to do it justice.

Biqua: The Master didn't enter Doctor Who until the Third Doctor.
