We haven't had any demographic surveys for a while so I think it's about time we had another one. No need to follow up, just vote.

Cheers

Good idea.  Perhaps you should have one asking "do you work in the rail industry?"

Why not?  If you are only voting, not posting a comment, it is anonymous, so there should be no reason to not vote.

409 Minister for Railways

What I am amazed is that the 15-19 age bracket (the one I am in, age 16) has so far got most of the votes so for hanging on at 25%. When I first joined and started posting, I thought I would be in the minority age wise, not so it seems.

You know 409, I am glad  Railpage seem to peak at the younger age. Opponents of Railpage (those mainly who have been thrown out of Railpage) - often call it a website run by children.

Well I'll proudly say this is not so and is being run by good hard working people surrounded by diverse and far ranging membership. And I also proud to see so many younger members interested in trains, trams and flanged devices! And to work with these  memebrs as well here and share each other knowledge. At the same time when I can I respec tthe older experianced members as well.

I care not if you are male, female, martian or even klingon,  if you like railways that is all I need to know.

So, if you haven't voted, please do so !!

Regards,

David Head

It's no surprise at all that the vast majority are in the 15-24 age bands; this corresponds closely with the age group who have grown up with home internet use and are old enough to be sensible users of it.

There is then the significant number of 20- and 30-somethings many of whom I suspect would have a professional as well as hobby interest.

And I am so far one of 5 in one of the older age groups, and happy to fly the flag for that generation.  Which flag I fly is open to some debate however ..... Wink

Interesting to see that the 25% of our users 409 refers to only adds up to 26 people! We have more members than that, obviously no everyone wants to put their age down...

As with any pesonal poll, you get either the people who do not mind their details being known, or you may get the people who may lie about their age. I never tought it would be a popular poll to answer...... Still if it shows the age groups of the people happy to take the poll it still shows a cross-section I thought would occure.

100 people out of nearly 10,000 is more representative than the Morgan or News polls (~1000 people out of 20 million) that send politicians into a spin. I think this poll would be relatively close to the distribution of the membership as a whole.

Why would people be unwilling to answer?  It is anonymous after all (to the users at least, and I assume to the moderators and administrators as well?).

The reason It took me so long to answer is because I only just found out it was here. Maybe there is an obvious link somewhere that I have missed (apart from the thread itself Rolling Eyes )....

Know the feeling.  I turned 41 on 05 April 2006.  I felt a day over 40 and I didn't have a problem with it.

One thing about polls like this is they will not accurately reflect the true age distribution of members.  It should also be noted that of nearly 10,000 registered members, more than half have never posted.  Then again, how many members who do post come across this thread.  I did so by chance.  This is no criticism of DavidB, who started this poll.  Media phone polls are similar, in that they rely on participants responding voluntarily and so are not always a true indication of what the population in general think.

The best way to get an indication of the age distribution of members would be if we were required to give our DOB when we registered, but even this may not be accurate as there is no guarantee that every member will admit how old he or she is...

Still, there's nothing wrong with having polls like this and I don't have a problem in participating.

Well Im in the 50 something's and definately an oldie. So that's one more vote for grey power! There should have been a old enough to know better box on the survey. Laughing
