Since I started commuting a couple of weeks ago I have noticed a V-set which stops at Thornleigh for up to 10 minutes each morning in the Up loop (one of the few trains to use that loop no doubt). It waits there until another V-set goes by city bound. I checked the timetable thinking that it was odd to have a V-set stop where I’ve never seen one stop before. I assume it only stops and picks up there because of the loop but the rest of the stopping pattern follows the normal ‘semi-express’ sequence. I’m not sure if this train starts from Hornsby or points north. Funny it’s not a Tangara or a K/R/S set if it starts from Hornsby. Any other examples of trains like this suburban Interurban?

Hornsby 8.14
Normanhurst ----
Thornleigh 8.25
Pennant Hills ----
Beecroft ----
Cheltenham ----
Epping 8.32
Eastwood 8.35
Denistone ----
West Ryde 8.38
Meadowbank 8.41
Rhodes ----
Concord West ----
North Strathfield ----
Strathfield 8.53
Burwood ----
Redfern 9.04
Central 9.07i

I dont know why it stops at Thornleigh, but it stops at Meadowbank so Central Coast commuters have a direct service to Meadowbank TAFE.

As loco44 said, the train stops in the Up Loop at Thornleigh to let the Newcastle Flyer which arrives at Hornsby 4 minutes after this train leaves Hornsby, to fly past. The train then stops at Eastwood, West Ryde and Meadowbank so it keeps a 5-10 minute difference behind the Flyer.

http://www.cityrail.info/timetable/ttable.jsp?line=nc&day=wd&dir=up&page=02 - The Thornleigh V-Set stops leaves Hornsby at 8.14am, and the Flyer leaves at 8.19am. For the Flyer to keep it's speed, it needs to overtake the semi-express V. Thornleigh's the only place where it can overtake until Epping/Eastwood, etc.

I catch this train every now and again from Thornleigh. Laughing

Still unusual stopping patterns just create confusion, There is no need for it. On most suburban lines there will be a couple of really weird stopping patterns which could cause the driver to possibly miss the stop. There should really only be about 3 - 4 stopping patterns at most. An express, an all stations and maybe 1 or 2 skip stoppers. With all of these stopping patterns happing several times a day.

I caught this V set when I was about 15 - it stopped in the loop at Cowan to allow the flyer to pass, then again at Thornleigh to allow another fast mover to go by. Left Thornleigh 0820 IIRC.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the stopping pattern. Gives Thornleigh and Meadowbank an extra train. Peak hours are always going to have odd stopping patterns simply because more trains are required - off peak, stopping patterns for the most part are very predictable.

Thanks for the info. I see a lot of people running for the train only for it to sit there for another 5 minutes. Always a good laugh.
It's a bit late to get to the city for 9 am but for the stops on the way it would be a handy service for those on the Central Coast. Can't imagine any poor sod sitting on it for over 3 hours from Newcastle. How long does the Flyer take?
On a related subject my train seems to go onto the Down loop some days but nothing has passed it so far. Is there an XPT behind us?

Saw another one heading to Newcastle this morning. It was to stop at Thornleigh at 645am then Normanhurst, Hornsby, Woy Woy, Gosford, Tuggerah and then some other stations which I can't recall on the way to Newcastle. It was a V-set. There's one timetabled to stop at Epping at 639am but no mention of these stops.

Very few people from Newcastle would be on it all the way to Central, given that there is a train that leaves later and arrives earlier ... people catching it from Newcastle aren't likely to be heading any further than the CCoast. I guess if you lived in Speers Point and worked in Epping it would be easier to ride a bike to Teralba than catch a bus to Cardiff ... but given the station counts at the locals-only stations in Lake Maquarie, that can't be a very high demand rail task!!

IOW, one of the kind of services that could be re-organized if North Warnervale comes with more stabling capacity.

The once-was-Flyer leaves Newcastle Beach station at 6:19 and arrives Central Sydney at 8:54, which is roughly 2:35.
