Was there ever a 24 hour suburban service (at least, similar to how the intercity one is atm) at any stage?

Nightride is good, why run trains for the limited people who travel at those hours of the morning, bus them. Better alternative and imagine the damage that could be caused by them on trains. Western Line mostly.

Mate, have you ever caught a nightride/nightmare before. When I use to live in Kogarah and needed to catch the nightride into work I would have to get there at least 15 mins before it was due. The first time I caught it it was 12 mins early, picked me up and didn't stop until central, so god only knows how early he was.

That's a comment on how society has degenerated more than anything else!
I used to catch the 0110 or the 0350 services to the Blue Mountains reasonably frequently in the early '80's and never saw any unpleasant behaviour, vandalism etc at all... These days, you seem to get a lot of that sort of thing even at 9pm!

yeah i tend to agree nightride needs an overhaul, maybe railcorp could buy up a heap of surplus bendies (read old) from adelaide and other cities, employ a company to manage them and have specially prepared "vomit comets" vinyl seats and flooring that makes em easy to hose out would be the ideal
Thanks for nothing Costa!

Yea i admit i don't use the western line regularly now, but how can you say that there is more damage on the illawara line. Never had any problems on the south coast line but have on the western line , but i think the school holidays is bad on any line.

Not comparing it to any other line, but in the mid 90's I used to come home from uni on trains around 9-10pm ex Wollongong, and don't recall ever doing it without seeing at least one drunk. I suspect the western line would be worse but I think boaf's statement "Nevr had any problems" is pushing it a bit.

Its definately one of the safest lines. Well put it this way ive havent seen youths get on and drink and smoke like i saw on a western line train between Penrith and Mt Druitt.

Is there any timetable online for some of these older services? And I remember a newspaper article that detailed the crime rate by each line - has anyone got a copy of this?

It also shows that transit police doesnt do its job properly. Instead of putting more officers on duty in late and early hours they patrol trains during business hours when there is the least trouble. Also I dont see how they improve passenger safety by attending the ticket barriers 90% of time. Btw I am not blaming officers but the management.
Nowdays it is impossible to get to work by 0600 in some circumstances. For me to get from Livo to St Leonards/North Sydney by 0545 requires to catch Nightride at 3.47 and than change to trains at Stratfield, so I have to get at 0300. Otherwise if I choose to drive I can afford to get up at 0450. It's a big difference.

I do think that at least intercity trains should keep running through the night.
You don't get too many problems down south, so stopping the Intercity at Hurstville and Sutho as per normal should be fine (don't bother with Waterfall. It's a dot, with a grand total of about 20 houses nearby.
This would work fine for me. I could walk home from Sutho. I've gotten home pretty late here without issue.
It wouldn't need to be an uber-frequent service either. I think one an hour would suffice.
Services heading up the Blues could skip all stops except Parra (which probably should get some kind of service regardless of hour) and perhaps Stratty.

JZ: You're well 'ard - over 2 hours sitting on a nightride, BEFORE starting work?
