Perfectly legal and not a SPAD, particularly on uni-directional track.

Reason I ask is that yesterday a Rosewood train was loading it's cattle on platform 5 of Central yesterday, and an Ipswich bound service crept up less than 50 metres behind to the previous signal waiting it's turn. Looked kinda dangerous - is this routine or just a good ol' SPAD? |
thornesyau on Wheels on Steel actually has a picture of exactly what you're describing, looking from a trailing loco. He might see your post and post the pic for you.
It is normal, and generally done in peak-hour to keep things moving nicely, using the signal foxtrax said.
Outside this, don't quote me, but I *beleive* that they use 1 signal block to seperate running trains? ??

What is the point of that? I fail to see what use a train is to anybody working in town that doesn't leave the coast by 7:30am. What we needed was a 15 minute frequency commencing at 6am and ending at 8am, with half-hourly commencing from 4am. Evening peak looks OK but kinda needs a 5:45 service too I feel, given that on those figures they are only adding two more in and not where they really need to (i.e. after 5pm). Even if some of these services were operated by 3-packs for the time-being it would be a big boost.

For us lazy uni students who sleep in and have irregular schedules, of course . The gap between 8:05am and 8:51am from Nerang has always been morning peaks' Achilles heal for me, and it was absolutely dreadful when the latter used to be a 3-pack, thankfully no longer.

Typically a 3-car SMU as well from memory, although that was in the days before the 160s came along and when the UG06 run that service was formed from took 90+ minutes from Domestic to Robina with 7 minute layovers at Nerang and Coomera.

Oakey dokey, the new timetables are partly loaded on the journey planner, and by all accounts, are going to take a bit of settling into for me as it is a completely clean slate. For the Gold Coast line, the changes only appear to be uploaded in the citybound direction so far.
- Off-peak trains now stop at Loganlea and Coopers Plains
- Off-peak inbound services run 5 minutes later (eg. :29/:59 instead of :24/:54 from Nerang), presumably making use of the soon to be commissioned duplication and possibly in preparation for Varsity Lakes extension. This also avoids the infamous Helensvale cross that works fine when everything is hunky dory, but when theres a significant delay, the system breaks down and delays cascade for hours longer than they should.
- A couple of minutes of fat has been added to the timetable (previously stations from Robina to Ormeau were 5 minutes apart)
- There are 5 services with 15 minute headways where it's needed most, leaving the coast between 6:30am and 7:30am BUT there is now an hour long gap between 7:30am and 8:30am which I know is going to haunt me everytime!
- Services in PM peak inbound are much more regular, sticking pretty close to the off-peak times, with a sole exception at 6:20pm
I'm sure theres more changes to be discovered when the remainder is uploaded - it gets worrying when the only service on a Sunday is at 11pm.
And unfortunately no 15 minute off-peak Beenleigh line services, though Coopers Plains now gets a nice clockface 15 minutely service to the city at :02/:17/:32/:47. (except one takes 8 minutes less than the other!)
I'm not well enough acquainted on other lines to comment on their changes, I'm afraid.

Why on earth is there an hour long gap at such a crucial time????
At the very least they should put a train in at 8am!

Look it is a work in progress, the person entering the data may have just forgotten to stick in an 8am service or something simple like that. To start bashing them wait for the full detail to be released. This is just the little inside work around to sometimes get information earlier

God only knows why Coopers Plains. A servo, dilapidated newsagent, public park, Chinese Church and some panelbeaters now have a 15 minute service (although it is also good news for anybody gunzelling on Boundary Rd at the Ridge without their own car e.g. me).
I can understand why Yeerongpilly has been booted, but surely Fruitgrove would provide better connections to Upper Mt Gravatt and the busway. Altandi would be less desirable as although it would help out Mains Rd you have to backtrack to get to Garden City, whereas you can get to Griffith Uni and Garden City by bus from Fruitgrove, and Mains Rd is OK during the day in off-peak. Perhaps their reasoning is simply that Coopers Plains has got stuff all else apart from the little local bus runs and needs some capacity.
Good news about the early services, presumably that ministerial release we saw earlier referred to arrival times in the city when it stated they were departure times. The earliest service is still after 5am though, should be around 4:30 by my thinking.
The nocturnal Beenleigh line proles will be a bit upset for a few weeks when they find out their express no longer stops at Yeerongpilly as well.

Misread the first post - glad to hear there won't be such a gap.

The highlight of Coopers Plains for me is Campbells Cash and Carry, so now theres two stores on the same train line, the other being at Nerang.
But they could have picked any stop from Coopers Plains to Kuraby, or none at all, and still utilised the third track to the full effect. I'd be tempted to go with SM247's suggestion that Coopers Plains deserve better than a couple of milk runs, but the fact citybound departures are precisely 15 minutes apart is suspicious.

A magical train appeared has appeared in that timeslot during todays Journey Planner update (the first since last Wednesday). I'm still shocked by the sheer regularity of the service - the current schedule is quite jumpy.
From my local station Nerang, trains are:
On the half hour every half hour from 5:30am to 9pm, then hourly to 11pm, plus two extra AM peak services at 6:44 and 7:15.
All of this is ± 1 minute (except for the 6:20pm). I couldn't ask for anything easier to remember!
