ZC 32 update

Is ZC 32 still stored at the Don River Railway ?

Well it was still there last Wednesday Mike. Here is some pics

I can tell you that the cab is stripped, nothing left. Has no dynamic brakes, been removed. The battery box has been taken off, the bogies don't have traction motors. Plus if i looked longer and harder i reckon its missing its electrical cabinet, various engine conponants. Come to think of it there was a wagon inside the workshops with a heap of EE engine parts

Well it was going to be staticly restored, but i think its sold and will be scrapped. DRR has been allowed to take some parts that they wanted.

I heard rumblings that they are now thinking of statically restoring this hulk Rolling Eyes

I believe the idea is to take out the engine and put it somewhere as a static exhibit then scrap the rest. I dont think thats a bad idea, but I think we should keep the rest of it as well and cosmetically restore it.

Well the idea to keep the engine came from it having parts that will fit the Y. The only problem I see is finding a place to put it, as space is already at a premium in the workshop.

This may be the only chance to preserve a ZC / 1300 class. Who knows what will happen to the P.N.T stored members of the class ?
I do understand this loco has had a lot of parts stripped off it but I think ZC 32 in the condition it is in ; is far better then no ZC at all.
If this loco is scapped then it is to late and one day everyone will say " We should have done something with it " This happend in New Zealand with the rebuilt new cab Dg class. NZ railway corp only wanted $1;800 for one that was in very good condition. We now wish we had preserved one. Even if no one in Tassie is interested in ZC 32 ; Would some one in Queensland want it ?
My view is that I dont think museums should scrap equipment ; I think the largest class of locomotive to ever operate in Tasmania is worthy of preservation ; even if it is only static. I have told the Don River Railway that I would donate money to them if they ever want to preserve a ZC.
Is there anyone else out there that could help tidy up ZC 32 for static preservation.
Lets save ZC 32 !

As I have said before, the locomotive is in extremely poor condition... and adding to that has been stripped of a lot of its parts.

The facts are that currently there are better condition ZC's stored, and Don has enough trouble with all of its other engines, currently down to one (only just) steam locomotive, a handful of shunting locos and the 10 Class. The X and Y have been "almost finished" for a long time now.

In a perfect world however, yes. ZC32 would prove to be a handy addition to the DRR fleet as another airbrake locomotive might provide some leasing opportunities in the not too distant future... but this loco is so far past it all it is doing is taking up valuable space in the yard.

It should also be pointed out that ZC32 was not actually owned by the DRR when it arrived on the site, and I am unsure of its current status... all this talk of scrap and salvage was (at least in the beginning) on the basis that DRR get the money that they are entitled to for storage which could then be used on other projects.

Mike the thing is that, ZC32 has a lot of parts missing. To gain those parts you need to pull apart another ZC. The cost to get those parts, is enough for another ZC easy. ZC32 also needs a fully overhauled V12 EE motor as well. Some members have said that if DRR want a ZC, they rather have ZC11(2141), the Devonport based engine.
The condition that ZC32 is in, its better to take most parts out and scrape it, LAte An, ATN and PN have taken most of the good parts out, its only left with a stuffed motor, most likely stuffed generator, cactus electrics.

Nice pics there tasrail2100.

I personally would like to see ZC32 cosmetically resored and placed next to H7. I'll grab some pics of her on saturday.

EDIT: ZC11, I'd be willing to do some work, the only thing is that all the work would have to be done outside. There's bugger-all room in the workshops as it is.

tasrail2100, thanks for the interior photos of 1331/ZC32. Brings back many wonderful memorys of the time spent there on the very long heavy drags to and from the coalfields of central Queensland in this loco.
