Flinders Street
New look for station

Kiss your fried dim sims at Flinders St train station goodbye.

The smell of fried foods wafting over the station will soon be replaced by the buzz of fruit juicers and the Zen-like silence of sushi makers.

Connex has unveiled plans for a new retail precinct at the station with some shops likely to be snapped up by healthy food retailers.

Savills leasing agent Richard Henley said today he expected the precinct to attract interest from retailers keen to grab a slice of the busy Flinders St market.

More than 70,000 people pass by the planned retail area each weekday.

Interested retailers can go to http://www.flindersstreetstation.com.au until September 15.

Well thats dissapointing, there should be an McDonalds express there (i know there's one on Swanston St, but it's not close enough).

As an adict for macas and other fast food i find that fast food junkies like myself are being deprived of fatty foods in public places as retailers prefer salads over good food.

Although it would be good to see some retail at Flinders Street i would hope that there will be a shop with Dim Sims and potato cakes with plenty of salt avaliable for those that dont want a cold salad.

While I don't mind junk food every now and then, in my view this initiative is a good thing because it makes recognition of the increasing prevelance of the convenience culture associated with food consumption. People undoubtedly want and consume food 'on the go' more than ever- so if that is to be catered for, it's good that it's been catered for in the form of healthier food.

Anyone reckon Boost Juice Bars are going to be on every platform? Seeing they have a relationship with Connex already via Connex Plus.

I don't care what they change to, as long as it's good worth eating..

I had a potato cake yesterday from the kiosk on platform 4, boy was it a insult, it was dry and hard.. but I was desperate for food and was in a hurry and what could I do BESIDES nothing and allow my stomach eat itself.. a bit, in fact just like self implosion!  Rolling Eyes

Sushi bar.. great do we really what Flinders Street smelling like fish?!  Wink

I just emailed them asking them to consider it. Go on, the more people asking for it the better!

The website does not say that "healthy food" outlets will be prefered - perhaps mX made that up to flesh the story out?

If the grease laden fast 'food' goes from the concourse area in favour of juices and sushi [yawn for wanting to get on the trendy/yuppy bandwagon].....will the fast food kiosks on each platform be replaced as well? Or are we just talking about the concourse area of Flinders Street station as the article suggests?

Believe me, compared to the fast food at the Richmond station kiosk, the ones at FSS are a delicacy.

Maybe they could open up a Subway on the concourse? I'd hit that.

So you can't walk a few shops up the road?

Walk to Subway, or better still make the food yourself.

I think they need to serve the REAL dim sim, something came from Crown Casino dim sim or Dragon Boat, not one of those fake dim sim you get form local super market.

There's a take away shop down Kitchen Rd in Dandenong (southern end) that sells what could be the ultimate home made dim sim, sell these at Flinders Street and they'd never go out of buisness.

I used to work at a Subway. You may be interested to know that 3/4 of the 'fresh' vegetables actually come pre-chopped in bags, staff leave Chux in the same bucket as the meat & cheese, etc.

The Melbourne Central one washes dishes with cold water and is infested with cockroaches. So glad I quit.

Anyway, back on track: open up fatty food shops. None of that salad crap for me. Hooray for fast metabolisms!

I thought they were going to move the barriers into the middle of the concourse and redo other areas?

Also, thought that Coles was moving in? I guess they canned all this?

The current plans only involve the concourse, not the platforms.  Presumably the platform kiosks will stay as they are.

Those supermarket ones are as real as Dim Sims get. Remember where the dim sim was invented.

China? No.

Japan? No.

Indonesia? Nope.

For fast-food-while-travelling-by-train addicts, might I suggest the South Yarra Station kiosk on the concourse there?

Hamburger with the lot: $3 and worth every cent. Chicken Schnitzel burger: $3 and usually damn good. Egg and Bacon toasted sandwitch: $2 and great for hangovers Smile

Best value rail station takeway in Melbourne, no contest.

As for the dim sims etc at Flinders Street: I'd be *delighted* if they got rid of the platform kiosks. Why? Well, if you've ever boarded a train there and found yourself in a group of four seats where the other three people are stinking the entire train out with vinegar, soy sauce and whatever the hell it is they put in dim sims, you'd want them gone too Laughing

ahh bout time those fast food places went. I hate it when someone buys a dim sim from there or chips and stinks out the whole carrige with the terrible smell. Although on a cold windy after noon a potato cake is quite nice to enjoy on the platform. IM never eating a dim sim from there again however, stomache pains about 20 mins after eating it like you wouldnt believe.

Damm thats odd, i used to work at Subway to in Hawthorn and i couldnt believe how clean they where with everything, it was quite a shock. I just quit because i didnt like the management staff Laughing

I was told they're like rubber. Better try one of the 7-Elevens across the road at Elizabeth St. I'll stick with the chukka's meals...
