Hi all
I found this article which I thought might be of interest to some and kill a myth or two at the same time about out of gauge bogies on the Perth B sets.

This quarters "Rail and Track", Page 4 EDI advert. Which is about Perth B series and QR IMU 161. It has a photo of both sets and you can clearly see the external disc brakes on the IMU.

Also to quote
"The bogies are the same as on the Perth 'B Series'..."
"The Disc brakes are mounted on the outside in order to give space for the traction motors".

Hope this is of interest to some.
regards
Shane

The interesting feature is not that the disc brakes are outside on the motored bogies, but that they are inside on the trailer bogies. The Perth A sets had them outside on the single trailing bogie per two car set. It would be fairly easy to use external discs on all bogies, which would make it simpler for maintenance.

The 160 series and the new IMUs use tranversely mounted motors, while the older SMU and IMU use longitudinally mounted motors driving through right angle gear boxes, which allow more room for other disc brake arrangements.
