Statistics indicate that 72 h is the patience level with quizzes, so have a clue at 68 h:
The line which was regraded is still open and carrying trains.

In 144 h I am off overseas, staying in places which may not have internet access.

The sought station fell between two portions of regraded track, but stayed intact. The line is still open (and carrying trains, not open but dormant). The station has been closed/removed/bulldozed/eradicated.

The station has expired; it has gone to meet its maker; it is an ex station; this station has snuffed it; (fallen off its perch doesn't apply).

Trains today zoom through the site of the station, and younger crews would never know that it had been there. However, one of the reasons for which they can zoom was the regrading work undertaken many years ago. At the time, work took place in each direction, but the station remained as a safeworking point, and a location where plant trains could be refuged while other traffic passed. No temporary closures and bustitutions in that era.

Ah, the dormant semantics.
Was Bairnsdale reopened? No, because it was never closed; it just didn't have trains for a decade.
We have many lines which are formally open, but have no trains (and frighteningly, more such lines each month).
The line which contains the sought station for this quiz is not only open in the formal sense, it has trains running on it.

As I mentioned in the earlier quiz (drowned station), regrading work took place in most corners of the state. In one of the four wtt zones, the only regrading which I can recall fast was in conjunction with realigning around the lake formed by a new or expanded dam; the other three wtt zones all had regrading work done for its own sake, and all of the ones which I can recall fast have survived in use today. That does show that the engineers and managers of the era were on the ball regarding traffic potential and the value of the work to justify the cost.

I didn't think that this quiz would be so difficult; many of the early entries were of stations which had had no regrading at all.

At last response: Not Creswick, Kyneton, Carlesruhe, Taradale, Bacchus Marsh, Lara or Drouin.

With 6 days left, I have a couple of clues spare: the era of the work, and the from/to grade figures achieved.

The wording is quite correct.
Portland is open but dormant, and the sought line is not in that category (hence it is not open but dormant).
Bendigo is open and carrying trains, and the sought line is in that category.

If the clue was unhelpful, I could delete it. There were remarkably few entries before it was offered, and there were lots of regradings which could have been nominated.

Have another clue: lots of entries were of stations on the Bendigo line. The desired station was nowhere between Melbourne and Bendigo.

I can let this drag into the first week of my holiday, as I will be in countries with ready internet access. On the second week, I will not only be on a jungle safari without internet, there is a strong risk that I will be hit by a poisoned blow dart or eaten by pygmy cannibals, and would like everyone to know the answer before that happens.

Not Tongala: it wasn't regraded (you have gone for upgraded).

Have the morning clue now: The result of the work was to remove some pinches as steep as 1 in 50, and have a through grade of 1 in 100. The work has had continuing benefits which are still exploited/enjoyed today.

Sorry Brendan: I certainly did miss it until the alert came.
Not Creswick, Kyneton, Carlesruhe, Taradale, Bacchus Marsh, Lara, Drouin, Nilma or Tongala.

Nilma was a good call, but not my choice. It was closed in 1951. I'd have to check the regrading dates, but I do have 1948 in mind.

I gave the grade clue last night. Next clue, if needed, tonight. Remember, the main clue is 'regraded' not 'upgraded'. If I asked for 'degraded' or 'downgraded' almost anywhere in the state could be offered.
