Since the discussion on visibility of the new livery is here...

Yesterday at Corio with N474 and FSH25. I was waiting for the usual A class + PH van + H set combo, but all I saw from a distance was a N class running light engine. The red stripes are all you see on the carriages, the rest blending in to the background.

Here is a photo I took yesterday of the morning Melbourne to Albury service. Photo taken rounding the curves into Broadford.

Another approaching Broadford station, unfortunately on the wrong side of the line for the sun but was the best possible for the time of morning.

Regards,

Lionel.

I saw N473 today and I can't say I agree with the change. The band looks smegged.

The reason for the breaks in the white stripe on N473 were the jumper cables and sockets on the right and the tail disc on the left. The gap for the tail disc was bigger and was the main problem.

The compromise is that on N459, a black edge about 25mm wide has been added to the tail disc and it is this black circle that is visible to indicate the rear of a light engine when the disc is folded down in use.

I think it would have been even better with a straight stripe across the end and an angled section on the sides of the cab (but that's just my ideas).

I saw N459 the other day on the Geelong line, and noticed that part of one of the cow catchers had been painted yellow? Is that my eyesight playing tricks on me, or did part of one end get painted yellow?

Cheers

A few people have mentioned they have seen yellow at one end. So it might have happened - no-one has photographed both ends of it and posted them.

I spotted N459 at Southern Cross about two weeks ago with the yellow tipped cowcatcher at one end only(the HEP end,No.2 end?).
The photo I took wasn't the best as it was coupled to a car set on platform 1,but anyway here's the image:

I got some photos of N473 this morning waiting to run the gippsland shuttles, for those who have not seen the new white reflective strip.

Looks like yet another variation in Sprinter livery is on the cards,7015 was spotted at EDI Newport today with a mainly red cowcatcher as opposed to black with silver lining.
I took a shot through the fence,it's not the best as there was a large support beam in the way but you'll get the general idea.

Nice photo thanks for sharing. I must say that they mainly red on the front doesn't look too good, in my opinion.

Personally I must say I much prefer the red on the front, it makes it look 100% better than the first 2 that came out with that livery.

I'm thinking all these different Sprinter liveries are all trial liveries to see which one looks best maybe?

So long as we don't go to anything grey. I don't see visibilty, safety and the travelling public (and crews!) being served by having grey all over the front.

wongm's picture of N470 exiting South Geelong tunnel is brilliant, look at that cowcatcher. Unfortunately, they fade, and you only have to look at N475 a few pictures earlier to see how visibility needs all the real estate it can get. Nothing wrong with that picture, but the loco just does not cut the mustard with visibility. You can look above on this page to see the somewhat unfortunate placement of the white band and tail disc on the front of N473.

No grey locomotives, is all I say.

No grey.

No gray.

No. Put bright shiny colours on the engines. Consider some of the colours with the various backgrounds and loss of light here (as contributed by a Railpage user, rino54 of France.) Lime green it really stands out. Nobody can deny. Check it out at the start. So what other colours stand out? I think the Sprinter is going to a much brigher red, and I wonder if it is missing the silver stripes?

All Going well, the third refurbished and repainted Sprinter 7015 is set to perform a test run tomorrow from Newport Workshops to Geelong & return to Southern Cross - the forward move will see Sprinter 7022 Shopped for D exam & refurbishment, this move will have another Sprinter + 7022 to Newport. Leave 7022 there and pick up 7015 and do the test & return.
  SN7 Chief Commissioner

Unfortunately - I have been advised by a reliable source that 7015 is not yet ready so all moves on my previous posting have been annulled.
