Dear All,

I've heard recently that as of the first of July this year (1/7/2007) that all louver van operations will cease within victoria... on the BG network... not too sure about the SG though...

I was wondering if this romour is true and whether anyone else knows of anything else happening that i've missed in relations to this matter???

Thanks:

Are you intending on getting a tattoo of a Freight Aus. louvre van on your arm to go with the Wallyrail S?

Well, it starts off as an S, then becomes an S, four pass cars and a D van when aroused.

Back on topic: I think it's quite plausible that PN want to get rid of louvres because they're so non-standard. Containers can do the job much easier.

But then, do they have enough flats and boxes? Will we see a VQOF-like program with VLCX and VLEX wagons losing their bodies and being fitted with twistlocks?

Off-topic is good.

Anyway: according to the linked post from csyjunior, Fasttrack laoding (which includes containers with three compartments) will cease, so that may free up a few wagons.

Goodbye to Victorian Louvre Vans? No, D Vans are staying Razz

In all seriousness, I believe you're referring to PN's louvre vans. I don't seem to think they'll be gone for good - their use will be dramatically cut, but they'll still be seen on odd occasions.

Just my thoughts.

Matt: D vans are in fact box vans - they don't have the opening louvres on the sides. PH vans are louvred, however.

Yes, fastrack ie LCL freight will be gone, all traffic to road, another prime advertisement for the privatisation process.

PN opting out of the parcel business, CSO obligations??

Small freight and box car operations don't have a place in modern railroad operation, just ask SCT!!!

PNs loss will be someone elses gain.

Guess this wil see the end of beer traffic ex North Geelong also??

A reminder to all, SCT took on business that the then National Rail, ANR, V/Line freight, freight corp, Westrail ets etc did not want, funny that....

Maybe there bosses are more accountable than head office bean counter spin doctors!!!

Such as what exsist in Victoria at the moment;.

Could we see SCT taking over these FCL services?

LCL = Less than Container Load.

Means to a large extent the dramatic lessening of the Warrnambool freight.

Possibly not, 9201/9202 usually only have a handful of lourve vans at the best of times for fasttrack and the main loading is usually mostly container wagons bound for wherever.

Haven't seen it for a while; I'll stand corrected.

Off the top of my head, Shepparton Fasttrack has more wagons then Warrnambool but it would appear less due to the lengths of the typical Tocumwal train. My gut feeling is the Warrnambool has about 15 - 20 wagons (container) including one of the few ex VLine 3 pack wagons.

It is a pity some clever freight forwarder hasn't offered a pallet-sized LCL service using containers (you can fit 20 pallets in a 40' box).
