Who's old enough to remember that famous day in September 1983.
Australia won the Americas Cup yaugt race. The first non-american to do so. They unbolted that cup from the trophy cabinet from the New York yaugt club. Everybody involved with the winged-keel Australia2 team became instant overnight heroes in no uncertain way.
So what has happened to the Americas cup, I was wondering when it was going to be raced again ??
I have only just found out that last week was when it was raced. Apparently the landlocked Switzerland beat New Zealand by a bee's smeg in the final race.
I saw nothing about this in the media.
How things have changed.

I remember that so well, was 16 at the time. It was a huge buzz back then because the Yanks had held it for over 100 years.
That factor has gone so everybody's like...who cares! It's just another yacht race now.
The one thing I remember the most from the 1983 race was Bob Hawke's infamous comment "Any boss who sacks a worker today for not showing up is a bum!"

The Americas Cup Yacht Race is held roughly every 2 years these days. Australia was knocked out in the first round this.

So, once they Americans lost the opportunity to set the rules (to suit themselves) and change them on the fly, they lost interest in the competition.

They are something to work for

Actually, I believe it is held every 4 years and in 2007, I don't believe Australia entered a boat since I cannot recall seeing it in the Louis Vitton Cup. For 2007 teams see:

I did watch all the 7 races and really enjoyed the 2007 regatta. Race 7 was one of the best sailing races seen in years, with the lead changes, the penalty and the 1 second victory, what a race!

Actually, the Brits had the first cup by the looks of it.

Yes, it was a very exciting series. Team New Zealand were a little unlucky in the race 4 (i think) blowing their kite.

It was in the media quite a bit, being on the 6pm news and also on the radio (at least abc actually)
The series was broadcast "live" on foxsport.

Yeah I was actually awake at 4am to see the race finish, Australia came back from being down 3 races to 1 to win 4-3. It was a memorable day, I took the day off school & I can still remember PM Bob Hawkes going nuts. We broke the hoo-doo, the wicked witch is dead, now winning it isn't that hard anymore. But we were the 1st in over 100 years to rench it back & that can't be repeated.
