I was wondering how much a train driver would earn p.a. I'm sure it would differ depending on whether its driving CityRail trains (suburban & intercity), Countrylink (XPL and SEPT), or freight work.
Very curious to know, thanks

A search using the terms Enterprise Bargaining Agreement or EBA might get you the information you are looking for.

Train drivers don't get a salary, they get wages.

You'll make more than some office workers. You'd make more as an electrician though. I'm not sure about the salary/wages part. I'm on a base rate, but because we do shift work, we're entitled to various allowances, etc. which means you'll always earn more than your base rate unless you're "off the road" and serving time in Lee St.

It's true what Clinty Boy said, we get a base rate. From trainee Driver to driver 1st year, 2nd yr and driver there after. Plus more if your a driver trainer or a Principal driver. there is extra's for starting before a particular time or late at night, starting earlier or later than your rostered time (altered working), millage, day in etc etc. A wage between 2 drivers could be as much as 10 to 15k difference, like I said depending on shifts and how many overtime days. this is for ETR drivers, as far as intercity and the others they would have slightly different benefits. Still I've worked a lot hard in different jobs than this for a lot less money.

I think that is a bit of a personal question to ask how much money you earn. All I will say is that it depends on your hourly rate, shift penalties, how much overtime you do, weekend work, etc.

I think only CountryLink Driver's get mileage payment's now... We certainly don't in Freight Australia/PN.
But to answer the original question, Freight Australia Driver's can earn anywhere between 75-80,000 base to well over 120,000 base depending on what depot you are attached to, the type of running you do and how many barracks jobs you do.
Right now, I'm on $57,000 base as a "Senior Second Person" with FA and with PN I was on around $50-52,000 for the same role, but that included variable APM and Aggregate payments.

Different companies would have different mileage benefits. With CityRail, both drivers and guards get mileage. Suburban mileage is calculated different to InterCity. Some one else can explain suburban mileage for you, but we get a certain amount of hours pay for a certain amount of kms travelled. For example, Roster A has a total of 321.150kms. Any roster between travelling between 300-350kms might be worth 8 hours pay. We can do the 300-350kms in 6 , 6.5 or 7.75 hours and still get the 8 hours pay. But if it took us longer, say 10.5 hours, we'd get paid for 10.5. Does that make sense? Also InterCity drivers don't get paid mileage to travel on a train, whereas the guards do.

You forgot to mention the best bit, we get paid for the rostered time even if we work less , but it all evens out because overtime gets used to make up the difference if we don't work the guarantee.

I have heard (rightly or wrongly) that PN crews in Victoria as a driver are getting $40 per hour. Not sure how that translates with conditions etc.

CityRail suburban drivers get paid at time and a half after they drive 209 km in a shift. Seeing as they also get time and a half after 8 hours, the milage payment for exceeding 209 km is only paid if they pass that mark under 8 hours. The two payments don't combine into a greater figure.
Suburban drivers don't accumulate milage while traveling passenger, suburban guards do. Suburban guards aren't limited in the number of kilometres they can work or the number of hours (it seems) but the drivers can only be rostered for 213 km and eight hours, thirty three minutes. Intercity drivers have no limit on milage worked and I think they can work 10 hour shifts.
The Intercity crew's conditions are a lot closer to the old 'Stable Rostering Code' that was in use when the railway was all one organisation. The suburban side has long had it's own separate set of conditions, the ETR agreement. The suburban conditions recognise that the work is more intensive and so doesn't directly compare with other types of working. Doing all stations Bankstown circles all day will never cover the same distance as say working a train to Lithgow and back. A full day of suburban running will however involve many more stations stops and the observation of many more signal indications etc.
CityRail management would probably like to get rid of the remains of the ETR agreement and make the crews work 9 or 10 hour days with no limit on distance traveled. This could be a bone of contention in future enterprise negotiations although management have avoided a confrontation thus far by failing to seriously negotiate on driver specific issues since just after the Olympics. Anyone for an AWA?
