I was on a Bondi Junction to Central service today and I could see (thanks to the nice announcements from the bloke on the PA system) the USS Kittyhawk. The guy on the PA system kept saying stuff like,"If you want to see the USS Kittyhawk, get off at Kings Cross" and "If you look to your right, you can see the USS Kittyhawk".
As a matter of fact, as I went back to Bondi Junction, I got off at Kings Cross and went to Garden Island.

You can't tour the Kittyhawk because of security concerns. Public tours onboard the Kittyhawk have been banned since September 11 2001.

Awesome - a guard doing some tour guide work Very Happy

I was lucky enough to board the Kittyhawk in primary school (10 years ago), and was really impressed, lost.

You'd have to be a very special boy (or a talented girl) to have gotten a tour on board this vessel.

Kittyhawk is the only one I've not seen. I've seen Connie twice - it's pretty big. But they all seem a bit small once you've seen a giant like Queen Mary 2. Shocked

That's a bit open... so you have seen all of the fleet? or just the few that have visited Sydney.

Last one I went on board was the Ranger in 1992.

I remember Big E's visit, it was too big to come along side Garden Island she parked out in the middle.

It was a sight. I think that was the last Nuc boat in Sydney before the greenies got upset.

Kitty Hawk and the Connie are exactly the same size (and the same class) as are all of the american super carriers except enterprise, she is 100ft longer. The QE2 is much smaller and the Queen Mary only appears bigger because she is fat all the way up to her funnels. The carriers are only fat up to the flight deck . Very Happy

I've been over the Constellation and the America. The Kitty Hawk is older than those, and was the first of the large carriers after the four Forrestal class. They are essentially the same as the first nuclear powered carrier Enterprise but have oil fired boilers. They never had the phased array radars used on Enterprise (which weren't really a success and were removed).

They are all much the same, even the nuclear powered ones.

My reference shows Enterprise as 1119 ft and Kitty Hawk as 1067 ft but they may not be measuring at the same points. The nuclear plant is heavier, but the nuclear powered ships just carry aviation fuel in place of the furnace oil.

They have the most confusing interior of any ship I've ever seen. I think we walked through the officers' wardroom thinking it was a corridor. There was a story that an office desk was thrown overboard because nobody could work out how to get it back to the store.

Once I was told that I couldn't get a tour of a CG-47 Aegis missile cruiser, but I just turned up and got shown over it, including the operations room. I particularly wanted to see the big back projection screens that were the main internal difference from our FFGs and DDGs, and to my amazement the whole group went through, although I was the only one with a security clearance.

By the end of the tour they took me aside and asked where I worked in the Navy. I asked too many questions.

Actually according to USN book, Connie is 40'6" longer and 5800 tonne heavier @ heavy displacement as modifications were made. But I doubt the naked eye would notice the difference.
