Hi all,
I note that on page 16 of the Feb 2007 edition of RoyalAuto, it states that $36 million has been allocated towards the construction of Coolaroo station, to commence sometime within the next four years.
Does anyone have any other information on this?

Seems like a lot for a station doesn't it - but still compare the road projects to the PT projects
As usual Clive Hall pays lip service to PT whilst being concerned over the appointment of a new minister specifically to manage PT - must be scared of losing all the dosh.
Anyway, this one slipped right over my head - was announced back on 16 November 2006.

16 November 2006
The Victorian State Government's announcement today that it will build a station at Coolaroo
"I welcome the state government's announcement today that it will build a new railway station at Coolaroo should it be elected for a third term in government" Ms Vamvakinou said.
"This is a positive development both for the residents of Coolaroo and for those who live in the surrounding area."
"I also congratulate the Broadmeadows Progress Association and the Hume City Council who have continued to be vocal in their calls for a station to be built in Coolaroo."
"When you speak to local residents here, the need to improve and further extend Calwell's existing public transport system is often listed as one of their key concerns, especially in a region that is growing as fast as ours is. Significant improvements like this to Calwell's public transport system are always welcome."
"For some residents, public transport is their only way of getting around. For those who use a car, I hope this will encourage them to use public transport more frequently. |
No mention is made on DOI's website for the Craigieburn electrification project - making me think it may be installed some time after the electrification is open.

Correct, Coolaroo will not be built for the opening of electrification to Craigieburn.

Seeing as it would be written into a separate contract, it would theoretically be done after Craigieburn opens.

Another Botchelor stuff up. Coolaroo station should have obviously been built with the extension of the electrification to Craigieburn as a station was clearly well justified by all the residential housing there, and huge gap from nearest electric service at Broady . In fact the old VR Commissioners introduced a bus service from Broady as an interim measure prior to extension of electrification over 25 years ago.

Just over 33 years ago actually. December 1973.

Coolaroo has always, as I understand it, been intended as a station but was not authorised in the first funding phase of the Craigieburn electrification.
The site has been marked on Melways for some years as "Proposed Patullos station"
That it is indeed to be provided is good news for that area.

Nothing new under the sun.
I can recall an extension to Coolaroo being proposed in the mid 70's

What did Keilor Plains cost to build? Factor in a small adjustment for costs increading in the last few yeras and that should give you a ball-park answer.

IIRC it was mentioned somewhere that Coolaroo will have an island platform and footbridge. Add to that a Keilor Plains-style shelter, bus interchange (possibly one on each side of the line since buses run on both sides?), and possibly a couple hundred parking spaces.
$36 million seems add up fairly quickly.
Bracks is probably also allowing for budget blowouts.
