TV's Beast Stan Zemanek dies
July 12, 2007 10:10am

TELEVISION host and radio shock jock Stan Zemanek, who made his name as a personality listeners loved to hate, has died of a brain tumour in Sydney at the age of 60.

The provocative and often amusing "shock jock'' had battled the brain tumour since May last year.

He is survived by his wife Marcella, two daughters, Gaby and Melissa, and two grandchildren.

"We have lost a remarkable husband, father and grandfather and Australia has lost a genuine icon," Marcella said.

"Stan put up an incredibly brave and dignified fight this past year and he was buoyed and greatly comforted by the expressions of love and warm wishes we received during this protracted battle.

"The whole family thanks his many fans, colleagues and friends for their love and support."

Mr Zemanek began his broadcasting career in 1987 and spent the majority of his time at Sydney station 2UE.

He made his name on controversy, trading insults with callers and being argumentative but always passionate.

Mr Zemanek will also be remembered as host of TV talk show Beauty and The Beast, for which he was the 13th and longest serving "beast''.

He was unashamed of his right-wing political leanings and made polarising opinions his trademark, along with on-air terms such as "numb nuts'' and "halfwit''.

He retired from radio in December last year to spend more time with his family.

Rest in peace Stan. You provided me with much entertainment on Beauty and the Beast. At least you are no longer suffering.

Condolences to the family.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Although Some of the stuff he said was pretty blunt and offended many, at least he had the guts to come out and say it. It's a quality very few have.

Vale Stan Zemanek.

While I did not agree with his politics either Liberal Party policy or it was wrong. He was a great entertainer and will be missed. John Howard has now lost one of his greatest supporters.

Condolences to his family.

R.I.P stan zemanek

let there be radio and beauty and the beast in memory as my late mum loved him on that show.

My heart felt sympathy with his family at this time.

Living in Adelaide, I never got to listen to Stan Zemanek. I have a friend who worked with Stan on Beauty and the Beast. At the time of this post, I haven't spoken with her, but I imagine she would be upset. Ironically, she has also worked with Bob Francis, who has become the Adelaide version of Stan on 5AA.

Vale, Stan Zemanek.

I'm not crazy, M'Lynn, I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years!

It's turning out to be a good year.

Zemanek out of the way, Laws retiring at the end of the year - if only we could do something about Alan Jones, then the world would be a much better place.

One less racist bigot to worry about.
