Hey All,
I have been called for this saturday to attend a info session. Just wondering are the tests hard? Do many people go to each session? and do they ever hire people around the age of 18?
Now do ALL CSA before getting hired HAVE to get drug tested??
and also what duties are invloved with being a CSA?
I would really like to hear other people opiions and people who can answer all my questions asked would be great!! as it is in 2 days i have the info session.

Yeah mate, what time are you going? I'm going this Saturday at 12pm. From the phone interview I had, IIRC there will be around 100 people in attendance (don't quote me on that though).
According to the info pack they sent me, "applicants are required to undergo a pre-employment medical assessment including a drug and alcohol test."
I need not say that you must pass all these tests to qualify.
CSAs have a huge list of duties, but I'll give the obvious ones such as maintaining and contributing to effective fleet and station operation and presentation, security & safety, ticketing, emergency responses, communication, revenue protection, train running, cloakroom management, etc.

You will do the tests with the other 100 people like you mentioned, then more than likely a cull will take place on that day. Further written testing on the day, and then they will let you know if you are in or out in a few weeks.
Next you will do role playing and psychometric testing.
If you pass that, then you will go onto the medical, including your drug and alcohol tests.
If you pass that, then you are probably in with a good chance. Expect the process to be long, allow a minimum of two weeks in between each round, the whole process could take over two months, depending how many people apply, and how many positions they want to fill.
If you get the job, put your head down and your smeg up, learn from the older hands and you will be fine. CSA is a good stepping stone to other jobs down the track. Most CSA's in most locations wear many hats, customer service hats, cleaner hats, ticket sales hats. There might be a few CSA's on here that can tell you more.
Good Luck

Does anyone know how many hours you can expect to work per week as a CSA?

Full-time CSAs work an 80-hour fortnight (i.e; 40 hours per week), without overtime. Currently, a CSA can work a maximum of 32 hours overtime in a fortnightly pay period, either as a 4-hour extension to an 8-hour shift, or an additional 8-hour shift on what would normally be a rostered day off (what's known as a "day in"). The maximum number of days you can work straight is 13 (i.e; you must have at least one day off per fortnight).
This is not necessarily tied to the calendar week - for example, a typical roster might have you working each day from, say, Wednesday through to the following Monday, and then rostered off from, say, Tuesday to Friday. This will usually be the case at the larger stations - if you find yourself at a smaller station, it'll tend to be more Monday-Friday (or Monday-Saturday). Also, your position will be either fixed or relief.
Hope this helps.

It certainly does, so thank you
CSAs certainly are kept busy, but the money is reasonable. To those of you wondering about the rate of pay, my info sheet says that CSAs receive the base rate of $17.82 ph (incl. industry allowance) whilst training, then get $19.72 ph once all training has been completed.

Yeah like this makes it impossible to cheat.

1. Not really. Some questions can basically be the same, but worded differently, so just pay attention!
2. Don't remember.
3. Yes, I was hired shortly before my 19th birthday.
4. All employees can be randomly drug/alcohol tested.
5. Cleaning the toilets, selling tickets, emptying garbage bins, cleaning up vomit, giving right of way to the trains, making announcements, cusotmer service, manning the ticket barriers, reading the paper, doing as little as possible! Each station has different things for a CSA to do, depending on the size of the station and how many other employees are there. As a CSA1 at Lithgow, I pretty much did everything except sell tickets. A CSA1 at Central, might just be cleaning toilet all day long. CSA2 might only be in the control room at a larger station (Central, Strathfield, Redfern, etc).
Ask all the questions you want at the information session, it is called an information session for a reason you know!!

I used to be a part time CSA and do 4 hour shifts. Not sure how many part timers they still have. A full time CSA usually does 8 hours shifts (can extend to 10 or 12 hours to cover overtime/emergencies). 76 hour fortnight.
Or is the 76 hour fortnight just for train crew? Do station staff get the ADO as well?
