Reading in the weekly times today, El Zorro has been contracted to run grain from 22 storage sites in Victoria, NSW and South Australia to port. They are runing these services on behalf of AWB Limted and some GrainCorp silos. They are running 40 wagon block trains, to be leased, and will run on both the standard and broad gauges in Victoria.

Will be intresting to see how they go, good to see a bit of competion for Pacific National. Obviously their 2 owned and 3 leased engines will not be enough so where will they lease other locomotives from? theres already a shortage of broad gauge locomotives isnt there? might see S302 in some quite odd places this summer!

Be interesting also to see where they are going to run to and how the crews get qualified. Also what BG wagons they will get. The might convert some of the AWB wagons to BG.

The answer is in the final three words of that quote.

El Zorro would be the de facto operator but the actual rolling stock may be leased from and be owned by soemone else.

Pure speculation here, but there are a heap of BG AHDL's in SA that are currently stored. Also plenty of stored AHGX's.

The GX's are SG, the DL's are convertable. Both classes have run on SG and BG in SA.

I realise that. But im sure PN wont lease any of their BG wagons to them, giving wagons to the opposition! Hence I was saying where would they get BG wagons from. I was just wondering if anyone actually knew.

AHDL's - quite alot were on the BG - (Ive just completed 2 HO models of them for my BG layout Smile)

They could use them......

Will be interesting to see them operate these trains.......mixed mash of locos and rollingstock......interesting times Smile

In all honesty I doubt the AHDL's will be going anywhere, at least not without something to replace them. At the moment there is enough to run one train with a few spares. But they will be required in SA once the grain starts running again.

The AHGX's have been stored at Dry Creek since they returned from NSW off the Manildra contract.

A possibility could be the Chinese-built hoppers that AWB imported, that were used in the ATN Access contract... The L's may have ended up with PN, but I'm sure AWB still own the hoppers & a fair few are, (well were last time I checked) in storage at Dimboola...

And where would the BG bogies come from, also, the XGAY's have had significant braking modifications done to them why would further dollars be spent converting them to BG,

If AWB have let contracts for the cartage of BG wheat, wagons would have been part of the deal
