Oooh, Spiffing, The tender is out.

This is definetly good news and confirms a rumour that's been circulating for the past 2 or 3 weeks.
  Metro Transit Minister for Railways

Location: Error.
I do all the Tender releases for DIIRD and so many of them are pulled from publication so often, or they'll release one and then scrap the idea even though it's been put into print.

So even though they have issued a tender for this, there is still a chance that they might re-prioritise the project and focus on something else.

But it is good that they have released a tender for it, so we can only wait until the first day of construction beguins.

2009 makes sense for a start date, as tendering would go until early next year, and then details finilized.

Target completion date is 2011/2012 at this stage. Very Happy

It will be great, one of Melbourne's shortest rail lines, the St. Albans line, at 17km, having more than doubled to 39km in 10 years, through two extensions! Shocked

Dang. I hoped that this wasn't going to happen this year!  Sad  Might have to move further down the line Laughing

Connex wont exactly wreck it. They will just have us Sunbury people have less confortable trains, stopping all stations so add time onto your journey and just be plain annoying.

Are there any trains in Melbourne that run express besides Vline trains?
  vlocity160 V/Gunzel

Certain sparks run express through certain stations.

Consult the timetable - many of the peak runs have identical, or even slower, journey times than the equivalent sparks.

P class locos aren't exactly the most nimble of creations, so the sparks will actually reduce travel time between Sunbury and Sydenham (that of course, excludes the effects of any extra stations).  In my eyes, any increase in journey time is more than offset by the vast reduction in waiting time.

Real life example: On returning from Caulfield races I almost always need to wait an hour for the 1915 after missing the earlier train.  Even if Connex services were 5-10 slower than what's currently on offer, I would still arrive home a hell of a lot earlier.

Yes, certainly. Some lines (particularly the Belgrave/Lilydale lines) get quite a lot of express running during peak.

Only on the:
Lilydale/Belgrave lines
Pakenham/Cranbourne lines
Frankston line
I think some trains run express Jolimont - Clifton Hill
Some trains don't travel via Altona as well.

During off peak trains Frankston run express Malvern to South Yarra.
On weekends the don't stop at Flagstaff.  And many trains don't stop at South Kensington or East Richmond.

Nexas The Ghost of George Stephenson

To sum up, there are express trains on all lines except for Sandringham and Upfield.

Alamein and Williamstown get one afternoon express each, however there are a number which terminate at Riversdale, on the Alamein line.

Sydenham gets a few, as does Epping, Glen Waverley and Craigieburn.

The others, Frankston, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Werribee, Lilydale, Belgrave, and Hurstbridge have a lot of express running.

It will wreck the journey, add 30 mins plus onto it i think, the new connex timetable will probably look like this:
Welcome to connex, this is a limited express service stopping all stations:
Salesian College
Sunbury
Jacksons Hill
Diggers Rest North
Diggers Rest Central
Diggers Rest South
Calder Raceway
Watergardens North
Watergardens
+ all the other stops to the city
I would definately prefer to be on a comfy V/locity or N set or a H set hauled by P's.

Probably, knowing connex goes 'station crazy' eg: Tottenham, West Footscray, Middle Footscray and Footscray, I think they only need 2 of them.

Not that many stations. If there were to be new stations built they would be at Jacksons Hill and Calder Park. I heard a rumour that the trains would be stabled at Calder Park with new sidings to be built there.

No there arn't, don't listen to that guy, he pulled those out of his head.

Stations are to be as they are now, Sunbury, Diggers, Sydenham, with proposed additionals at Calder Park and Jacksons Hill being considered, we will see what happens.
