I assume the GM will be 32 or 34? Good thing it hasn't rained this year or it would be very interesting if QR kept going to GWA for backup units and GWA were trying to move a decent harvest.
Mate, if that loco pulls as hard as you do, it'd move anything.
I'd still rather have an ALCo.

There has to be a solution to this problem. What if a few trailers are driven in a specific direction e.g. Mel->Syd. Wouldn't there then be a surplus of bogies in Melbourne?? |
There is no problem, because piggy-backing is not an issue.
If Toll and Asciano thought there was a quid in it they would have done it long ago.
There is just not the economy of scale in Australia to make piggy-backing viable, other than in special cases such as the Shell tankers on the Darwin line. Note that even there it is only the tankers, no other piggy-back business has been picked up.
Even for those in the rail industry who are often cynical of the motives of the big-boys piggy-backing is just not on the radar.

I'm not sure you understood my question. My question related to bi-modal trailers, not piggy backed trailers. With piggy backing there is no problem because the trailers can be transported empty. I'm not sure how the bogies are transported if it is without a trailer.
The curious thing about bi-modal is that no fuel tanker is offered. Leading to the situation you have mentioned.

Is the 13th Nov kick off being a Tuesday departure from both Perth and Melbourne, or is it a Melbourne departure with the 1st one out of Perth being Saturday?
Also are all 3 trains running imediately, or as loading requires?
Thirdly, will the WA crews be QRN or ARG-QR?
Cheers

Next Wednesday there is to be a launch at the Dry Creek North yards for the new service and the Adelaide-Perth, Perth-Adelaide services are to be -AP6 / -PA6.
If anyone can fill in with some more information about the train numbers it would be much appreciated.

Last timetable I saw had them as 4AP1/6AP1/7AP1 returning as 7PA1/2PA1/3PA1. Between Adelaide and Melbourne they keep the existing AM6/MA6 numbering.
Ex Adelaide at 1450, 1215 and 1430hrs respectively, though there obviously needs to be some fine tuning as 6AP1 is down to depart both Port Flat AND Dry Creek at 1215hrs!!

Sounds pretty good bing. From my info first one will depart Adelaide on the 14th (4AP1) loading is very small could be as little as 10 wagons. The two CFCLA crew cars have appeared from Islington Works as CDAY 1 (ex overland sleeper?) and CDBY 255 (ex bluebird) at the MPC so I assume they are going to be used on these trains. VL352 was taken to Melbourne late last week on AM6 so is Interail going to use them on the AM6/MA6 services?

My guess is that it has gone to Avteq to have a few bugs sorted out, but anything is possible these days.

Does this explain the QR skeleton flats being railed westwards in gondolas?

These would be the NG wagons (BAUY I think) being sent to WA for use on the NG over there.
