New Car Set FN3 and other V/Line fleet changes

  SN7 Chief Commissioner

Further to last weeks post of the creation of new car set FN 18 - another FN set was released from Newport Workshops today, comprising ACN9 BRN 47 BN 8 & BTN 254.
This almost brings into line the requirement to create 12 FN sets as part of the new V/Line timetable and to cater for increased passenger loading.

A further FN Set FN 5 will be the next one created  with ACN 15 BRN 40 BN 13 and BZN 252 - Of which BZN 252 will be painted in the new corporate livery.

Car BTN 254 in theory should be the last carriage to be repainted in the red livery.

Car Sets N 3 & N 4 will remain as three car sets.

Car set N 16 "may"  become FN 16 with the addition of rebuilt car BZN 267.

Car BCZ 257 will become history on entry to traffic of car BZN 252 and car BCZ 262 will disappear when BZN 267 enters service - the last remaining BCZ car BCZ  259 will remain in traffic as a spare car until BZN 262 is released in earlly next year.

Car sets FN 14 & VN 12 are presently at Newport being overhauled , repainted and fitted with power closing doors. The last car from VN12 (BTN 268) was transferred with N 3 .

Hope this info is of use.

Just out of interest, how many 3 car N sets are left?
  SN7 Chief Commissioner

At the moment there are three which will be N 13 - N4 and N 16 then if N16 becomes a FN set that will only leave 2 , N 13 & N4 which are both not yet fitted with power closing doors.

Great info mate. Much appreciated Smile

Can I ask why were cars ACN 9 and BN 8 withdrawn from N3 while BRN 47 was taken from FN19? Sounds to me it would make more sense to take all cars from N3 then just add the BZN on that  Confused
  SN7 Chief Commissioner

BRN 47 was always part of N3 - BRN 56 is in FN 19.

The full N set went to Newport with carriage BTN 268 and returned as FN 3 with BTN 254.

Also for the record FN 3 will make its first  run in this form on the 1833 Shepparton tonight.

Set 18 emerged as VN18 from the paint shop originally. The 'V' has been removed and the cheap as smeg stick on letters used to add the 'F'. (VSH29 has the cheap letters as well):

And BZN258 - no different to any other bar extra power door mods:

I have noticed the 3 cars of VN18 and BZN258 were the first cars to get an extra set of indicator lights for the power door system. There used to be just a green light outside that lit up when doors released, and an internal red one one the roof above each door when the doors were locked. These new sets also have a red LED array next to the door handle - I think it is green when the doors are released.

I forgot to add - BZN258 retains the old-school pull down blinds for each window, in addition to the standard curtains other cars have. Most of the other Z cars converted have just had the cavity at the top blanked off. (with either stainless steel or black plating over it)

Set N3 operated on 8315 Down Albury Pass and returned as 8334 Pass on Sunday 14/10/2007. Consist of 8315 was N 454 - BN 8 - BRN 47 - ACN 9.
8315 was nearly fully booked and as 8334 was fully booked, a road coach was put on at Wangaratta to run direct to Melbourne with the overflow.

Was N3 withdrawn from service after the arrival of 8334 on Sunday 14/10/2007 and forwarded to Newport on Monday 15/10/2007 for BTN 254 to be added to the consist?

When did N3 go to Newport to become FN3 ?
  SN7 Chief Commissioner

N 3 was in service right up to last night, it ran the 1225 Bairnsdale which arrives back at around 2000, on retun from South Kensinton, had BTN268 added to the front and with loco N457 went to Newport on the 0913 Transfer pilot. It arrived back ex Newport at around 1330.

At newport BTN268 was shopped for refurbishment and BTN254 added and ran the 1833 Shepparton tonight, the BTN car had 1 (one)  person in it leaving Southern Cross in contrast, the 1817 Down Swan Hill was N13/BCZ259/BCZ257, and left Southern Cross with Standees in the 2 ""Z" cars,- Mostly Sunbury Commuters.

Car Set VN17 Is out of traffic also at the moment - and two "scratch" VN sets are running. the other to replace VN 12  which is at Newport.

N4 arrived ex Swan Hill this morning with BCZ257 and 262, these where removed  car BCZ 262 was placed onto FN 6 and ran the  1813 Albury and car BCZ257 was placed on temporary set (F)N 13 as listed above. N13/259/257.

N4 is also out of action - this caused the 1724 Bacchus Marsh to run as A Single Vlocity instead of a FN set.

Consist watchers should note BCZ 257 & 262s last runs as they will be history probably by this time next week.

BCZ257 retains its WCR internal upholstery and did not receive the V/line logo when it was repainted.

As for the 1213 Albury run this was rostered in the old timetable as a 3 car set, the extra passenger loading could have been caused by group travel or the end of NSW School holidays.
It should run as a 4 car set very shortly, one would hope.

SN7, thanks for the information regarding N3 and the other set alterations.

BCZ cars have been regularly included in the consist of Albury line trains.
8310 (06:40) ex Albury on Sunday 14-10-2007 was N462 - ACN 12 - BRN 44 - BN 11 - BTN 268 - BCZ 267H (Set N4)

The overcrowding on the 12:33 (8315) service to Albury was a combination of the end of the NSW school holidays and end of Seniors week.

BCZ 257 was sitting alone in the pass yard this afternoon. N13/BCZ259 were together stabled in the yard.

FN3 was at Southern Cross this afternoon. It has a big F next to a normal sized N. Unfortunitly I didn't get photos of it or I would have missed my train  Laughing

Regarding the Z cars.

BCZ262
BCZ262 was on the 0625 up Albury (8310) this morning, trailing N463+FN6. The train arrived into Platform 7 at Southern Cross on time at 1008.

The same consist will form 8243 - the 1840 down Warrnambool this evening, returning on 8220 (0710 up Warrnambool) tomorrow morning.

It will then run to Albury on 8331, the 1813 down, then return to Southern Cross on Monday morning on 8310, the 0610 up Albury.

Will then run around with FN6 on other intercity (and a Marshall service or two) for the week.

BCZ257
BCZ257 last ran yesterday on 8220, the 0545 up Warrnambool, which consisted of N465+FN13+BCZ257, and arrived into Southern Cross platform 3 at 0910.

It's rostered to run on tomorrows 8315 - the 1233 down Albury, and return on its last revenue run in its present state, 8334, the 1655 up Albury, arriving into Southern Cross at 2039.

Then, on Monday morning, it will be transferred to Newport Workshops along with N5, leaving Southern Cross at 0913, and due into the shops at 0936.

N5 will return as FN5 later on Monday afternoon, with a converted and repainted ACZ252 (now BZN252). FSH25 will also return with it, departing Newport Workshops at 1115 and due into Southern Cross at 1137.

At this stage, BZN252 will make its first run in its new state on the 1833 down Shep, 8333.

Anyone up for an ad hoc 'Farewell BCZ257/WCR cars running with V/Line' trip tomorrow? Razz

We could catch the 1733 down Seymour through to Seymour arriving at 1852, then return on the up ex Albury, travelling aboard BCZ257, arriving into Southern Cross at 2039.

I don't think I'll make it unfortunately, due to school the next morning, and having to leave home at 1509 and not getting home til 2310!

It'd be greatly appreciated if anyone could get some 'last' shots of BCZ257 though, external and if possible, internal, tonight at Southern Cross, and let me use them on my site.
