A letter dated 11/10/07 to members and volunteers says that LCR will cease to exist as an operating entity as from 31/10/07 and surrender its lease over the lines it operates over. It will retain its lease over the Mt Gambier roundhouse, at least while it disposes of its assets to other interested societies.

Lack of local support, falling volunteer numbers and a mountain of regulatory requirements are suggested as the main reasons for the decision.

Those Red Hens will make for an attractive sale.

Any clues as to the number of members the society have/did have ?

That's sad news. I wonder what will happen to their railcars and all their operating red hens?

I've got a hunch they will be purchased and moved interstate.

That's rather sad. Never got to go on their Red Hens! I suppose if the proposed regauging of the track went ahead (all the way into Mt Gambier) then they would have no track to run on?

All SAR rail vehicles were gauge convertible

Not a problem ... there's plenty of broad gauge remaining in SA and Victoria. IIRC, the standardisation plan only covers from Wolsely to Penola, and Mt Gambier remains as BG.

But .......

Mmciau (Mike) you may be surprised to know that a lot of SAR vehicles were not able to be gauge converted without a lot of work being done.
Some rollingstock simply could not be converted at all, Railcars would be able to be converted though! Cool

...the Red Hens will make for an attractive sale? What a joke! It's already hard enough for the groups with Red Hens now to keep their noses above the water line, let alone more 'train brains' rushing in to buy and run some MORE Red Hen railcars....Good luck to LCR and what they achived...hard work for ten years...but sadly when not enough people and volunteers put their efforts and mouth were it REALLY counts...down you go. Cheers to those memories down south, with LCR and cheers to those volunteers who did so much! Cool

Topcat you need to read all the post's made in this thread, it was stated that they may be wanted interstate for running, I do not think anyone in their right mind would try and run them in SA! Cool

What I should have said was any new groups in SA, existing groups may want them, Steamranger or Yorke Peninsular Rail for instance! Cool
