The Large Erecting Shop - Its future PART 2

I have locked and unstickied the original thread when it went off topic.
READ the following again everyone !

This thread is solely for the preservation of the large Erecting Shed. It is NOT for RTM/3801 Ltd bashing (or any other operator). The politics of the Government can come into it, but I'll expect to see discussion as to what can be done, and how to go about it.
=======================================

The Rules:

Site management has been more than tolerant of all the discussion about various NSW based organisations, a historic loco and a historic shed. And no one has paid any attention to these rules given in a major thread for discussion of the above. Making contributions seen by many people as very negative.

Rather than keep this one thread, It has been decided to split up the topics. Initially we have these topics:

* The Large Erecting Shop - It's future
* 3801 sightings
* Rail Transport Museum
* 3801 Ltd.

Other topics may be introduced -by moderators or by request via the ticket system.

NO other thread will be allowed, and will be locked/removed.

Be warned, these threads will be watched very closely by moderators and Admins. We will warn users without hesitation should they stray even close to the line, & delete post as we see fit. This is not free speech territory - this is a private website, and you play by OUR rules.

Keep your discussions factual (with appropriate referencing) and away from slander of any organisation or person. At any time you may be asked to provide a source/reference for any information you may post or opinion you may give - should you not be able to provide this within a suitable timeframe, or breach any other rule in this thread you will recieve a larger than normal warning, and be issued a special warning as your last chance in this thread. If you breach the rules a second time (or if your first time was a serious enough breach), you will be requested not to post in this thread again. In addition, your username will be posted as part of this message. If you wish to avoid this kind of negative exposure, play by the rules.

Any user caught posting a thread on one of the above issues, attempting to introduce the above issues into other threads, or pushing the boundaries will be swiftly and harshly dealt with. No grace period, no exceptions, no appeal.

By posting henceforth you agree to these rules.

Barred from this thread(for now):

Redwatch have posted a new update on their website regarding the Eveleigh Site, including The Large, being placed on the National Trust top 10 list of Australia's heritage at risk. It makes for some interesting reading:

Redwatch:
http://www.redwatch.org.au/update/update071107#_Toc182206660

Heritagerisk media release mentioned in article:
http://www.heritageatrisk.org.au/Nov%202%20NSW%20receives%20boost%20in%20national%20heritage%20struggle.pdf

FoE Concept plan mentioned in article:
http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/statesignificant/southeveleigh/whatif/070730foe/download

Quote:

The Eveleigh Railyards were nominated by the National Trust of NSW for the national list of Australia’s heritage at risk sites. In Tasmania, on Saturday 3rd November 2007, the country’s top ten at risk sites were announced and the final list included Eveleigh Railyards as well as Garden Island Hammerhead crane. The Ku-ring-gai Blue Gum missed on inclusion in the top ten after receiving a pledge from the Federal Government to help preserve the area. The “Our heritage at Risk website” www.heritageatrisk.org.au contains details of all the nominations including Eveleigh Railway Workshops, Redfern, New South Wales. The New South Wales Media Release of the announcement said of Eveleigh:

“The Eveleigh Railway Workshops are some of the finest historic railway workshops in the world, containing one of the most complete late 19th century and early 20th century forge installations, and an excellent collection of cranes and power systems.

Various buildings within the facility have already been redeveloped and adapted to a range of non- railway uses but several significant buildings have been rezoned for multi-storey development.

Government policy at this stage appears primarily directed towards the commercial redevelopment of this historic site, with rail heritage consigned to remote facilities, unlikely to have the resources to properly present and conserve these historic trains.”

REDWatch and The Friends of Eveleigh continue to campaign to try and retain the Large as a functioning heritage rail workshop to service heritage groups from around the state and as a Sydney base for heritage rail tourism. With the RWA planning to sell the bulk of the North Eveleigh Railway yards with a concept plan in 2008 and occupants of the Large being told they could continue to use the building until 2008 there is little time to change the mind of the Office of Rail Heritage and the NSW Government about the need to preserve at least part of the Eveleigh Rail yards as functioning rail heritage.

If you support the vision for the Large outlined by the Friends of Eveleigh in Friends of Eveleigh’s Concept Plan then please write in support of the Large being retained in active rail heritage use rather than being classed as being surplus to RailCorp’s heritage rail requirements and the building being passed to the RWA to become part of the Australian Technology Park. We suggest you write or contact the Office of Rail Heritage with copies to the ministers involved with the future of the LES.

At least the LES has all the equipment required to service locos.

Not just a fancy round carport

Get behind the National Trust as we can see what this government is doing to our cultural heritage and the skills that go with it.

Just look at public transport generally, then look at hospitals, DOCS, desalination and the run down of museums and other cultural institutions.

One of the unpleasent jobs as a moderator is get the equal annoyance from both sides of any argument/flare up, and I know by pruning a lot of flames from this thread, that may be the case.

But gee lets report what does happen with the LES, and what events are happening to save it, or at leat preserve it's use or existance. Doesn't matter if they can do a web site properly - or how well a group are organised.

Facts, dates, accounts of visits to gov about the issue etc. sighting at the LES, it's condition today etc are all USEFUL stuff for US ALL. List the groups who are involved etc.

Let's try this again !

I've just been to a great exhibition at the National Trust featuring the Large.
Great paintings by Jane Bennett with a few known identities such as 3801 and workers

You can preview it at
http://www.nsw.nationaltrust.org.au/events/festival/2006/janebennett/

She has also painted the last days of Darling Harbour (also closed down by $artor as he turns our town into real estate and concrete). The Carriage Works and Walsh Bay are also featured before the big end of town got their hands on them with a little help.

Go and have a look
Observatory Hill

I think she my just follow $artor around painting everything Mr Casanova touches - before he $%#&^%%&^ it.

Also thanks everybody who has been sending protest letters in to save the Large - you can get details of the Premiers email address off Redwatch if you want to help

3801 Limited

It was decided during restoration that a separate organisation needed to be formed to manage 3801 when it returned to service. In 1984 3801 Limited was established to oversee the operation of the locomotive. The State Rail Authority, the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum and the Australian Railway Historical Society (NSW) were former stakeholders. In 2005 RailCorp indicated that 3801 Limited's fixed term 20 year lease of locomotive 3801 would not be renewed. In addition, the NSW Government has plans to redevelop the Eveleigh site for non railway purposes. Despite a campaign by 3801 Limited, on November 26, 2006 control of the locomotive passed to the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum.

EDIT: See this song I uploaded on my website:

I'll echo Mbax - 'So what is your point' Timothy ?

This is a LES thread not a 3801 Ltd. or RTM etc etc thread.

ps I am expecting a PM or a post to explain Timothy - this as a Moderator.

Not really as the term can be used for any sort of building that is Large & can erect items.

Sadly there is not much news happening out there or at least is being brought forward. The problem I guess is one that David mentions is that it seems to end up becoming a slanging match by the protagonists of each side of the debate.

Being Australia weekend there was the news that there has been "X" amount of items placed on the national trust or some list of significant items.

Of most note it seems is Bondi beach, & the opera house, what about the other 98 sites? We know that the Trust has listed the LES in its listings, but has it gone any further?

Nothing has come out recently from redwatch.

May be its time for all the heritage rail operators to get together considering what's happening in NSW.
I can see (don't need a crystal ball)that we will all be losers.
No LES, no museum for the RTM, no South Maitland, no rollingstock or locomotives.

This couldn't be OUR Frank Sartor could it??

Donations row: Sartor snaps at 'scumbags'

New South Wales Planning Minister Frank Sartor has indicated he may take legal action against journalists who he says have unforgivably trashed his reputation.

Earlier today, Premier Morris Iemma lashed out at journalists and threatened that they could face a libel suit if they continued to question Mr Sartor's integrity.

Mr Sartor has come under scrutiny over a decision to approve a housing development by a major ALP donor in Queanbeyan, against the advice of his own planning committee.

The Minister has also faced questions over whether he was soliciting donations from developers whose applications he was considering.

During a rowdy Question Time today, the Opposition asked Mr Sartor about the Queanbeyan property deal.

One Opposition MP was ejected and another, planning spokeman Brad Hazzard, had his microphone switched off when he told Mr Sartor: "You're the fool because you took $164,000 for the Labor Party before you made the decision."

In an answer taking around 20 minutes, Mr Sartor said he had done nothing wrong.

"These people who other people might charitably refer to as scumbags - but I won't, Mr Speaker - continue to trash people's reputation..." he said.

"I value my reputation. I think that these loose asides and trashing of someone's reputation is unforgivable.

"My decisions all stand on their record. No-one has ever been able to say I have ever acted improperly or partially on anything, and that has stood the test of time."

Mr Iemma accused the Opposition of trying to smear Mr Sartor's reputation.

"If you have an allegation to make about improper conduct, evidence or information, there is a standing royal commission called the ICAC [Independent Commission Against Corruption] to take it to," he said.

Developer defends Sartor
The developer of the land at the centre of the Queanbeyan controversy, Bob Winnell, says nothing untoward has occurred.

Mr Sartor rezoned land to allow for the development in Queanbeyan last year, after his planning committee deemed the area unsuitable because of excessive aircraft noise from Canberra Airport.

The company that requested the rezoning approval, Village Building Company, had donated $164,900 to Labor over the past five years.

The deal delivered it a windfall of more than $100 million.

Mr Sartor says the donations did not influence his decision and he approved the development because of the area's housing shortage.

Mr Winnell, the company's chief executive, says his company has never sought nor received any benefits from political donations.

"Our donations have been on websites for up to five years," he said.

"They're readily available to the public. They're not disguised and they're not aiming at anything improper."

He says it would be a departure from normal practice if the land at Tralee was not approved.

"I find it a little intriguing that the legal framework and the planning framework only pointed to one area of the region for future residential development - and that area is the area including Tralee," he said.

"And now we are being accused of some impropriety or departing from normal practice."

Mr Sartor says he was lobbied by both it and the local community to rezone the land.

"I had a choice - do I just go with the panel's recommendation and allow one developer to have a monopoly on the supply of land in Queanbeyan at a time of rising prices or do I try and accommodate 25 years of growth, which is what we've done everywhere else in the state," he said.

I'm more worried about this:

Heritage advisers will take on development under office amalgamation

Wendy Frew
February 19, 2008

THE body responsible for providing heritage advice to the State Government will be folded into the Department of Planning in a move critics fear could seriously undermine protection of heritage buildings and sites in NSW.

Heritage Office staff will be integrated into the Department of Planning's development assessment and policy teams, with heritage experts placed in teams assessing development proposals.

The Heritage Office supports the Heritage Council of NSW, which will continue to function as a statutory body advising the Minister of Planning, Frank Sartor.

A Planning Department spokesman said the change would "elevate consideration of heritage matters into the heart of the department's core activities".

But the merger will exacerbate a conflict between protection of heritage and the planning process, said the Opposition's heritage spokesman, Brad Hazzard.
