Lots of sightings from today:
Morning:
X39 in Tottenham
A77 and P19 on the Tocumwal? freight in Tottenham, locos facing Melbourne
NR56 in Seatrain livery and a DL in PN livery in Tottenham Loop, looked really good.
P21 with some containers in Tottenham yards
S306 and S307 and S301 (I think all of them) in Dynon Yards
Afternoon:
P20 had attached to P21 with the containers
A81 was now present in the yards, with T388 beside it
Also saw VL40 at Southern Cross. Pictures coming tomorrow.

Whilst waiting at Laverton this morning for 1PM9 (NR82-NR83-G514) i saw this working towards Geelong at 1051.
N458? leading newly painted car set with N451 trailling
Is this a normal working through out the week or a one off.Never seen N classes on a push/pull.

The train that you have got there csyjunior is VN12 minus a car running tests. N class locos are unable to run push/pull configurations, I am assuming that because VN12 is minus a car they have attached an N class loco to replace it for the test.

Here we go with infactual information and outlandish assumptions again!
N Classes ARE able to run in push/pull configurations, having done so for the Avalon Airshow specials since at least 2001. Their dynamic brakes can't be used when in this mode though.
The train csyjunior saw was VN12's test run out to Geelong ex Newport Workshops, which provided all went well, should have proceeded onto Southern Cross; the set to enter service at a later date.
Only four of the five cars (ACN36-BRN35-BN23-BZN273) have been completed so far, the fifth, BTN268, is not due out at this stage for another month.
N458 lead the train as a test; making its first appearance out of Newport Workshops since the 23rd of October, after having an Intermediate Component Change out and some other works completed on it.
N451 came along for the ride, and presumably, as a backup in case N458 had problems. Getting out of Newport Workshops and onto the mainline would have been easier with locos at both ends of the train.
I believe wongm saw it too; I messaged him regarding it and he replied saying he was trackside.
Cheers,
Matt Julian

The meaning of the word assumption wasn't what I was making a point of, it was more the way in which you assumed the N was added to replace a missing carriage; for the record, the mass rating of a BTN carriage is 50 tns, compared to the N class locomotives mass rating of 124 tns.
Oh well, issue resolved, back onto sightings!
Cheers,
Matt Julian

I think this may go under the 'Sightings' thread at least as a start.
Werribee, 9.45am, Dec 21: N 474(?) and N 472 in the Down direction, light engine. Not sure if both were powering; any ideas what this is about?
