The issue of whether or not scanner based "sighting" posts are legal is currently under investigation. Refer to http://www.railpage.com.au/f-p970269.htm#970269.

Please note, that until further notice. solely scanner based "sightings" (ie, trains that you do not actually physically lay eyes on) are not permitted, and will be removed. Thank you for your cooperation.

John, this should also encompass ROTA and ViziRail sightings.

As more network operators make the transition to digitally encrypted transmissions, the humble 'radio scanner' will become a desk toy.

They are in Europe!

In the Netherlands particularly, trains can not hear other trains talk to train control unless they're in the vacinity.

hmm... we'll take that on board. The main reason for the ban is that complaints were made that posting scanner info was in breach of Federal law. As mentioned, this is currently being investigated, and when the dust settles, all the mods get out of holiday mode Razz , and the world is all sweetness and light again, we will figure out what we're going to do. Going down the path of increasingly restrictive rules is something I wish to avoid. This is supposed to be a hobby after all, and hobbies are supposed to be FUN. Smile
