The longest straight track in the world used to be between Ooldea and Loongana on the Trans Australian Line (about 450km).

But the Russians have straightend the socalled Tsar's Thumb and the 650km line between Moscow and St Petersburg may have taken the record.

However what looks straight on a large scale map may have plenty of bends when you look close up. The M-SP contains such wiggles(TM). A closeup of the TAR shows no such wiggles.

A passenger document produced in 250,000 print runs back in the days (1960s/70s) - actually the CR/ANR TAR passenger Strip Map which was given to each passenger at the time (this map I can guarantee to to be 100% authentic because I produced it) Exclamation

My book Railway Track and Signalling Diagrams of Country South Australia 2002 shows the straight starting at 795.0 km and finishing at 1272.1 km (477.1 km) in the same ball park

I have read somewhere that the straight is 512 km long, I don't know where that came from ?
