Shame about the weather, but some gems there, like the Top Points key (?) and the rain on the window!

Did the usual gig on the 10 Class last Saturday, and tested out the 400D on our 'being towed' runs down or up the hill.
Also noted, a recently acquired diesel locomotive from a mine at Mt Isa, QLD. Don't have any further details apart from it's number 5802, so hoping some of the Banana benders here might have some more info.

What you have here - and I have occasionally wondered where it got to - is the old shunt loco from Mica Creek Power Station, Mt Isa. When the station was coal fired - up to the late 90's - this was the loco used to place coal wagons for unloading, after QR had delivered them. Conversion to gas power rendered the little fella redundant.
I have but one photo of it on location. (Why would I bother to take more? Everything stays the same forever, don't you know... or so i thought. )

Is she at all operable in her rusty state?
She should be a good loco once running, and will no doubt earn her keep.
I have to agree with Trent regarding the Top Road Staff shot and the one after it of the valley below, although there are many shots like it, you have captured the scene well showing the ZZR in a typical Lithgow day with over-cast sky, a bit of rain with the dead tree breaking up the some-what constant vegetation.

Well, if the engine is rusted up I don't like your chances of her running to well....and it is very possible that water has gotten into the engine "cavity" so to speak and made the engine or other insides in-operable.
Do the electrics still work, or have the wires and switches rusted and therefore have lost their electrical conductivity.
Rust can affect how well she operates very easily...
I do realise you are a locomotive fireman/driver and you have alot more of an idea about locomotive operation then I do, and you have probably taken my comment as trying to put down the ZZR's choice of loco which is why you have questioned it, but saying rust doesn't effect how well a loco can operate is just plain stupid...
External rust such as is displayed in the picture won't matter at all, except for aesthetics and the protection of the insides from the elements, its more the fact that if the outside of the loco has rusted its likely that the insides have rusted in one way or another as well, which could effect her running capabilities...
But, dis-agreements aside, this thread is about Maikha's pictures, if you wish to continue this discussion feel free to PM myself or start a new thread.

Have a go at how some of the GM's an 830's look. They looked like they had been rusting away on scrap row for years but still go hard up the grade

Dunno how it got there, but the loco was for sale by Mario at Australian Train Movers for a large number of dollars.

Tom,
The point im trying to make is what does body rust have to do with how well a loco performs. There are plenty of dodgy rusty diesels out and about with some of these private operators that have more holes in them than swis cheese but they go like the powers of piss.
Yes there is a chance that water can enter into an engine but its unlikely it will "rust" it so to speak.

I'll grant you that for sure Jaas_3001, plenty of engines that look like swiss cheese.
She's certainly an interesting loco and I look forward to seeing her in person.

I wasn't there on the day of delivery, but apparently Little Toot was operable to the point that she could be moved under her own- er - diesel. However lots of cleaning up to be done before being servicable as such. I don't know a lot about it but she has a six cylinder engine (Cummins, I think) and is six-wheel mechanical jackshaft drive.
Matt.
