Victor station is looking great, and has been completely refurbished and repainted into the 1920s paint sheme, and Goolwa is getting the same way with a new picket fence and soon the home signals and train order signal will be going up.
This was done using mostly work for the dole labour.
All of this and the track is now in great condition, with heavy resleepering and guys out there 5 or 6 days a week working on spot resleepering or track alignment means we are probably better off than TA!

It not just the track, the stations are in better condition than TAs paint encrusted large sized bus shelters !

I wouldn't be thinking is clever just how much work was done by unskilled work for the dole people for $5 an hour ! Mind you TA do the same thing for some of their stations.

I have to admit its tempting to go down to SteamRanger while the locos are still in pieces like that. Get the chance to learn how thing machines work, see more of the engine of 930 for example. Where as if they are running that day you wouldn't be able to do more than peer inside the portal windows.

On a 930 there are no side windows to peer into except on the cabs which are too high off,of the platform to look into anyway. Cool

I can post some pics of the inside of a 251 if you want.

We can always use extra extra help up at Mt Barker. We usually kick off sometime around 7am on Saturdays. We finish up when the work is done.

With any luck 621 will return to service for the Easter holiday weekend and will probably work the School holiday CT's too.

I still reckon 621 would look better with smoke deflectors fitted though !

Yes it would be quite fitting, after all Philip Mountbatten does have large ears. That's where his eldest son gets them from.

Mike, BTW, there now is a new bus terminal beside the depot. Yes ?

I'd like to remind all that there is an Adelaide Metro bus service from Adelaide (Currie Street, Grenfell Street) right into Mount Barker, at least once every 30 mins. There is a direct service too to the Mount - that being a bus that travels directly to Mount Barker via the Freeway.

And the bus service is versatile - with regular services even on Sunday mornings.

So, what are you waiting for ?

Hmm it seems that my NMRI gallery is down at the moment. 251 pics will have to wait.

Work on the bus depot is progressing ok, but has been causing us no end of headaches. We have unfortunatly lost road access to the yard in Mt Barker. Because there is a heap of powerlines runing across the depot yard, the only place we could lift heavy items was in the yard next to the station and we have lost the ability to do that now.

Having said that Phill and the team down at Goolwa depot have modified the apex of the triangle there to allow for ro-ro access off a low loader. This would have been advantagous when we moved the F class down from town in '96. The F was unloaded in strath on what was the old fuel road at the eastern end of the yard. While this worked fine, the truck extended out almost closing the road, and this apparently did not impress the local constable.

We get the feeling that the contracters may be cowboys tho. They did not like where the power had been run for the turn-table so they (with our permission) dug it up and moved it. They obviously didnt move it far enough because they found the power cables about a week later with some piece of earthmoving equipment.

Anyway when the bus depot is complete, as 2001 said there will be a direct Adelaide-Mt Barker service, that will set you off out the frot of our station.

Yup 2001, I looked at the timetable for the Mt barker via freeway bus. Earliest that one gets there is 8:30am on Sunday, maybe the other bus routes get there earlier.

With the current heatwave conditions ~36c, bring a hat, water, sunscreen, long sleeve short etc. I can't cope with the heat despite taking all these precautions, so I'll wait for a cooler day to come by Sad

With any luck 621 will be on the business end of the first Southern Encounter of '08. We hope to have her ready for steam-up too.

Have to agree about the smoke deflectors they may be useless, but the loco looks more brutish with them! Cool
