Something happened today that worried me....

At the time I sort of didn't really let it get to me, but as I think about it more it's a shame that society has lowered in standard to this degree.

Today I was out taking photos, enjoying my hobby and minding my own business.

A young girl in a car, probably late teens yells out to me "Take a picture of the sky", she's just bein a smart@#$% of course. Then she yells "you suck".

What sort of society are we becoming, why can't I do something I enjoy without being vicitmised. I used to cop that sort of thing at school, I was put down alot and told I was stupid. I have a disability, so I guess people see that and like to insult me any way.

I wouldn't put that past this "girl", I use that term loosely when describing this so called "girl". She wws in the back seat, I couldn't see anyone else in the car cause all the windows were up. My guess probably with a group of "friends" off to get drunk at a party. She was doing it to impress her mates.

I am sick to death of people insulting one another, just because they don't see that we have different interests in life. I have my camera around my neck all the time when I'm out, particularly when near railway tracks. I guess there are some narrow minded people who would see me as being weird because of this.

It just rubs me the wrong way when I can't do something I like doing without being told "you weird, you suck," or whatever other comments people make.

I guess I'm rambling on a bit, but society is going down quickly, by and large people these days lack manners and don't accept that people have different interests/hobbies.

A teenager in a car with a bunch of their mates is largely immune from inhibitions of mortality, responsibility or respect for others. The world passing by the open window holds no claim on them, it is merely present for their entertainment and edification.

Or: Dude, don't worry about it, kids in cars are all a bunch of hundred metre heroes. They're only picking on you to make themselves feel better about being insecure and shallow with an uncertain future. They don't call you names for your benefit, it's all about them. They wouldn't do it on their own, only in a group.

It only hurts if you let it.

Plenty of wankers drive past cricket fields and shout 'howzat' for the sake of it.
This 'lovely sweet thing' was trying to prove her manhood.
Plenty of good ladies follow trains and not just because of their husbands.
Be grateful that she was not your daughter or your future wife. Very Happy

We know we have a good, clean hobby that hurts no one either physically or mentally.
Long live the train chaser. Keep on taking photos and let smeg heads be smeg heads.

The other day when I was at Strathpine, there were three young fellas sitting on the steps of the bridge where I wanted to take photos.

They noticed I carried my camera around my neck and one of them asked me what do I take pics of, I said trains. One of them asked me if I'd heard of the Valley Rattler, do I like the Tilt Train and such.

They all claimed to be railfans but I sort of had my doubts. As I walked away, I heard them say something then they all laughed, so I do think they were "BS'n".

Because of them I missed a 2800 hauling containers towards the bridge. Evil or Very Mad

The way i see it, as long as your out having fun doing what you like then i say bugger everyone else that wants to knock you and have a go at you. Although i see your point it is hard to ignore it sometimes. Personally i dont really tell anyone of my hobby, except family and close friends that already know.
As for the 3 boys, dont worry to much, thy must of had some knowledge of the trains in the area to start a convo like that. Any way keep up the good work! Smile

To Colhad (and others): don't waste a second of your life concerning yourself about what others may or may not be thinking about you.

The problem you have is esteem ..... "self-esteem". Nurture and build it. When that is done you won't give a damn about any detractors.

Colhad the best idea is to say you are a photographer and leave it at that!

Also the lad that spoke to you could have a genuine railway enthusiast although being with his friends would have dulled his sense somewhat. I always try to make friends with anyone who shows an interest in what I am doing while photographing, but be warned you have to have a bit of a sixth sense about some of them, most though if they are by themselves will open up a bit to you and you may even get some friends out of it, on the friendship side of it explain early to them about your condition and hopefully they will not be put out if something happens when they are with you or something.

Do not go by looks though, I have met bikies that look like they would shoot their own mother if asked, ask me at the side of a rail line what time is the steam train coming along here and then promptly produce a camera to record the event. Cool

Colhad, I understand where you're coming from, but think of it this way . . . Did you know this "girl"? Do you value her opinion? Is she likely to influence your future?
I guess that you answered " No ' to those questions, so here's one for you. . . Why worry about what some ratbag thinks?
Your friends, relatives etc think well of you, and those are the opinions that matter.
I agree that society suffers from these misfits who find it necessary to put people down, but just remember that you are above that sort of nonsense.
On these occasions, a superiority complex is essential. Keep taking all the photos you like, and ignore the idiot fringe - after all you are doubtless exhibiting talents that they don't have.

If we can encourage and support a fellow-enthusiast who has had a hard time, it is a legitimate use of the forum. As far as I'm concerned, say what you feel; you are among friends.
