Some of these people might end up securities traders and friday night millionaires...but most won't.
They will end up at Centrelink where they will shout at the clerk "What da phuck does this mean" when handed a form that decides whether they get money from the government, or have to knock over old ladies to get the money for their 'speeding' habit.
Their few seconds of feeling powerful will pale into insignificance against a life of - insignificance.
You will see them in the outer urbs and abandoned provincial cities, having 10 babies to 11 different blokes.
They become child protection and family violence statistics, they make fodder for Today Tonight, they are the reason the unemployment rate doesn't fall below the NAIRU.
They are the reason Australia has such a large welfare budget that it becomes impractical to cut taxes further.
I'm sorry, and I know it is a crime to talk about the class system in Australia, but it's real.
It's also a crime to be proudly upper middle class, and to say - well I got drunk a bit at Uni, and had a good time...but we never did things like that!
If you need to get in touch, drop a comment at the Transport Textbook or on my blog.

Colin, those people are not worth even one second of your time. I would not have even turned my head to look at the car.
If people ask, tell them you're a photographer with an interest in trains. Some may even ask to see a few photos on your camera!

Saw two blokes today, one was the same bloke I saw last time. He crapped on about the Valley Rattler again, and said he worked on MVHR. Reckoned his family runs it.
Just a question for anyone associated with the MVHR in Gympie, does anyone from that organisation know a fella by the name of "John Woodward"??
I asked him a few questions, he sort of didn't give me a straight answer when I asked him what sort of locos the MVHR use. If he did work there, he should at least have a clue of what runs there.

As long as you are happy with who you are, Col, that's all that matters! Some people are not happy with how they see themselves and have to drag other people down to their level. Don't let them do it!

I was standing in the corner on the ledge there you know, and he came over to me and gave me a hug.
He blocked me in so I couldn't get out and said "I won't let you out until you show me the pics on your camera".
As he ran off to catch up to his mate, he laughed.
I'm sort of worried about going back there again, just not sure about this guy. If I see him again, what's he gunna do next.
The thing is these fellas are young, people of that age are hard to gauge at times. Is he truly a railfan or is he smegging on.
Good spot to gunzel from but I'll go elsewhere.

Colhad. It not even worth the effort with these F***wits who wanna make your life Hell. I learnt this myself. I might not have a disability myself but thats beside the point. You who you are and people shouldn't judge you or make fun of you for it. From my exprience I haven't had much trouble from the general public but probably from my apprience. Another word of advice for is to Stop giving a rats A*** about anyone else other than you or other railfans you are with and the station staff I hope this helps
Cheers Michael 301M

Face it, I think almost everyone has experienced this in one way or another but we just ignore it and let it go. We enjoy what were doing and thats what counts. Who cares what other people think!

Colhad - this is the more difficult bit. The bloke who blocked you in must have believed that he had you bluffed or frightened.
Here's something to try. If someone approaches, get in first . . . say something like, " G'day; great day for taking pictures" If you greet him before he speaks, you have taken the initiative, and he will conclude that you're not worried about him.
It mightn't be easy for you, but I think it's worth trying.

Ricardo, that previous post of yours summed it up beautifully, as much as it is sad, it is so true!
Col, a word of advice, completely ignore these idiots that hassle you, because it all comes down to a game of psychology.
One of the main probable reasons why they do this is for the response, especially the bottom feeders of society like the girl you outlined.
It hurts them so much when you just completely ignore them, truly......... as all they are trying to do is psychologically intimidate you, and that gives them feeling of power, which they really get off on.
Generally, you will find they are suffering from poor self esteem and are very very insecure in themselves, so they need to fix this by giving themselves a feeling of power.
Don't waste your time even responding, because you can't reason with an idiot, you will never be able to reach out to them or make them understand, so why waste your time.
And as far as the young fella, that wants to get physical with you, I would try to avoid a situation like that all together, by keeping well away from the area, becuase no one does something like that witout an allterior motive.
Unfortunately, as ricardo pointed out, society and the government are encouraging these idiots to breed, and they are definetly growing in numbers, which is making it hard on the decent people of society like you and me, but you have to have a coping strategy to deal with them.
If it makes you feel better, I'm a train driver with Citytrain, and when I was in Sydney on the weekend, I was taking some photos at St Peters station, and I copped some sh**t from some ferals, so it does happen to us all buddy.
But just take care, especially with that young lad, and enjoy your hobby, because I take photos of trains and I drive them too for a living, and I don't consider it anything but an inoffensive hobby.
PS, I have found too that you have to be careful, geographically speaking, maybe some places during certain times of the day are probably best avoided, ie places like st marys and mt druitt around 2pm onwards due to the social demographics of the area, i.e. nice shiny camera equals big bucks at the pawnbrokers!!

I guess that you answered " No ' to those questions, so here's one for you. . . Why worry about what some ratbag thinks?
Your friends, relatives etc think well of you, and those are the opinions that matter.
I agree that society suffers from these misfits who find it necessary to put people down, but just remember that you are above that sort of nonsense.
On these occasions, a superiority complex is essential. Keep taking all the photos you like, and ignore the idiot fringe - after all you are doubtless exhibiting talents that they don't have. |
I wouldn't pay a second thought to her childish rants.
Somehow I doubt the opinions of one who probably needs to binge drink to have a good time matter in the slightest.
They will never say it, but their just jealous that you have an interest to occupy your time, and don't find it necessary to just hang around to waste your free time

Of course one way to have responded to the "You suck!" comment is to ask her if she does and whether you'd get change for a 20 afterward.

Today on a train heading back from Box Hill. At Richmond Station I was showing a mate a photo I had taken earlier on in the day and this woman boarded the train and seen me with the camera in my hand and yells at "Next time get permisson A***hole". I just said as she walked past "Get F***ed and mind your own business". Oh well its just what Gunzels have to put up with Druggies, Bogans and Halfwits roaming the System

As has been pointed out elsewhere on Railpage Australia™, if photograpy is allowed, you do not need anyones permission to take a photo with a lot of people in it. Only if you photograph one person up close, do you need permission and then it is really more a courtesy than anything else!

I was approached by police a few weeks ago, they actually had a look through my camera. I know they were checking to see if I had taken indecent photos of people or not.
The only thing they found was trains, they didn't have a problem. I explained to them that it's just something I do, I take pics of trains. One of the cops was a photographer himself although he didn't say in what area.
I've been approached by cops on a few occasions and never had a problem. It's not a criminal offence to take pics of trains.
