Could someone please tell me why there are three platforms at Menagnle Park on the Main South. One is the one currently in use the other two are disused and overgrown. One is directly behind the current one, while the other is on the same 'track' as the second one, just further 'south' of it. Any information on this is helpful. Thanks in advance

Cheers, NSWRTM123.

There are actually four platforms at Menangle Park. Two are currently in use. The other two longer platforms are the former racecourse platforms for Menangle Park Paceway.
Menangle Racecourse

Now if you meant Menangle itself it has three platforms one on the Down, disused one on the Up (where the station building) and the newish Up Platform.

Menangle Park is the old Menangle Racecourse junction which served the paceway at Menangle Park. Menangle Park Paceway is currently being upgraded and will become the home of the NSW Harness Racing Assn when it eventually sells off the Harold Park complex. This location is also the regular home of the Menangle (Park) Markets and the Campbelltown Show (2008... 4th, 5th, 6th April).

Menangle is the next station south (over the river) and served the dairy co-op. (For those who can remember... The Rotolactor)

The racecourse platforms are now disused and the track uplifted.

In recent years, the Menangle Park racecourse sidings were used to store supplementary interurban cars and some passenger brake vans, all without their roller bearing bogies which had to be returned to RailCorp (or whatever they called themselves at the time) after their sale.

I'm assuming it was the same story with the cars that were stored in the Mittagong Brewery sidings in the 1980s.

Also if you are travelling on the NSWRTM trips on Sunday I may suggest that you have a look on the UP (towards Sydney) side of the line just as you cross the Menangle Bridge as you will see the platform remains of the temporary terminus of the line while the bridge itself was being built which has a nice shiny metal box on it. Very Happy
