The North West Rail Link has been converted into a metro, to run all the way to the CBD along the NWRL corridor, down to Top Ryde and then along Victoria Road, to interchange at Epping, Wynyard, Martin Place and St James with a light rail interchange at Pyrmont.
As expected the CBD Rail Link has been quietly dropped, with the presentation merely saying its need has been "deferred" - which is appalling, considering it was an election commitment.

You mean metro to Melbourne via Granville and somewhere else out west? 200 stops and minimal seating with average speeds of 40km/h for the whole 1000km journey. Expect to stand most of the way.
I used to think highly of Iemma over the "opposition" or whatever dumb asses as well but not I realise his as stupid as the 99% of the other politics in the country. Give it 50 years and most non-westernized countries in the world will have a far superior transport system to us.
The bastards should be jailed for white collar crime and stealing tax payers money, because technically thats what they are doing with their shenanigans.
Fix the heavy rail and build it where it should be in the first place morons (instead of changing your tiny minds) and then build your metro's for more realistic distances rather than for what, 40kms?
| Quote: | | Mr Iemma said it was a "historic day" for public transport in NSW and would ease congestion on the rail network. |
It was probably like that the 5 billion other times something like this was announced until of course people woke up and realised that it's all bull..... ****....

It's good that majority will be underground, so stupid Sydneybus driver won't "park" on any part of the line
Driverless metro is nothing new, France had them since the early 70s, Florida/Chicago in the 80s, London/Taipei/Singapore in early 90s.
Hey?..whatever happen to my warning level?

Agreed, the NSW government has decided that the North West residents are the scum of the earth and shall get nothing but dust for voting for the opposing party.
The Liberals won't build it because it's to 'spensive.
We need to burn and start again with NSW politics.

I disagree this time, the difference this time is that the start date is BEFORE the next election, so they know that this is their only chance to be re-elected, however small that chance is. If they start it before the election they might get some traction with a scare campaign "if you vote Liberal they will cancel the metro".
I know that the line goes through mostly Liberal voting areas, but its an overall perception thing, to be able to show that they are REALLY doing something and that it is already happening, with maybe a few more lines announced (with people actually having half a chance of believing them because one is already under way).
You know that without this line started before the next election in 2011 they have no chance of re-election.
You have to remember that this is the first rail project that has been conceived and announced since Iemma became premier... the original NWRL and SWRL were announced under Carr, not that it really makes much difference.

The following is an excerpt from what has been put up on the TIDC website. It also mentions that more details will be on a linked site to be put up tomorrow at 1000.
My question is: Does this also mean the CBD Link is off? If so, what can will be done with future Clearways Campbelltown Express LIne services once the City Circle is at capacity? Terminate them at Central??
--------------------------------------------------
The North West Metro is part of Sydney Link, a series of major transport projects aimed at providing modern, integrated and efficient transport to cater for Sydney’s growth as a major global city.
The North West Metro is a 38km rail line which will run from Rouse Hill through Norwest, Castle Hill, Epping, Top Ryde, Gladesville, Drummoyne, Rozelle and Pyrmont before reaching Wynyard, Martin Place and St James.
The North West Metro will provide a high quality mass transit link for residents in Sydney's rapidly growing North West and will also bring rail services for the first time to residents in Sydney's inner suburbs.
Euro-style metro will provide high capacity, high frequency services. It includes a system of single deck trains with more doors, allowing passengers to get on and off faster, reducing delays at stations and enabling quicker travel times. It is a separate system that links to other forms of transport, making travel easier with seamless interchange across the network.
The first section of the metro to open will be between the Hills Centre and Epping by 2015. The entire North West Metro, from Rouse Hill to the City will be open by 2017.
The North West Metro will generally incorporate the alignment and stations previously proposed by the North West Rail Link but will include the additional benefits of directly linking the North West with Gladesville, Drummoyne, Pyrmont and the CBD.
He remembered he was doubly irritated because he had forgotten and because he had remembered he had reminded himself twice not to forget (James Joyce).

One thing I've noticed is there's no stop at the old White Bay site which will most likely be redeveloped to contain either housing or an events space.
There are advantages to this route - it's far more direct a route to the CBD and should be much quicker (and the difference between any time added to travel to Chatswood and North Sydney will likely be negligible).
We need that second harbour crossing though, regardless.
The real problem is that this probably won't be a "true" metro.Chances are that not enough rollingstock will be bought (to save on $$$) so it'll operate on a lower frequency - that's if it's built at all (a matter on which I'm skeptical).
The M4 East will almost certainly go ahead, unfortunately.

Hmmm
Has anyone thought about the maths behind this. 38km metro to take 45 minutes? That is an average of 50kph.
But.... aren't there are 17 stops (?) so allowing a minute for each stop you only have 28 minutes left and that ignores the slowing down and speeding up time (ask any V8 superstar that impact)
So its 38 kms in 28 mins. Thats now an average of over 80 kph. When I drive I have to travel at around 100kph to average 80kph on a trip.
So are the metro's going to be sitting on 80kph?
They certainly will need to be Ferraris!

With the many doors and high frequency (3 minutes in peak and 4 - 5 minutes off peak according to the documents) it will not need to sit at each station for 1 minute... more like 20 - 30 seconds max, so there is at least another 8 - 12 minutes of travel time. I'm sure they didn't just make the figure up.

There's a fairly long sustained section without a station on the map provided in the PDF (which is available from nsw.gov.au) about the "metro").The stations also have a bit of a "clustering pattern, so there are several other shortish sections where some speed can be gained.
Still, it's not an ideal solution. Heavy rail was a better idea for the Hills.

It if doesn't work properly could the section to the Hills be converted to Heavy Rail in the future?
Bring the 3900s back to Brisbane
Bring Karlsruhe Tramtrains to Australian cities
Extend the proposed Metro to Taylor Square
Extend the Gold Coast line to the Tweed

Possibly. But it wouldn't be a great idea if they don't do the CBD link (as it looks like they're going to dodgy out on, once again)...
