A Steam Train ran from Ipwsich to Shorncliffe and return today and I was stunned by the amount of school aged children out and about. I never skipped high school to chase a train and certainly would not miss University or call in sick at work! I will admit though, that I have swapped shifts at work or asked for the day off to chase a train.
Am I one of the only people with this mentality?

Way back in grade 9(1997), had 3 days way from school, due to me being stuck down the West Coast of Tasmania. I was doing my volunteering bit for Don River Railway, part of the Emu Bay Railway's Centenary. I didn't quite get told off, but i did have to catch up on a lot of school work!

I almost took today off and was prepared to leave early if my train got near home before knock off time. Luckily (for me) they had problems, so I managed to catch it after knocking off

I use to skip school for a few hours for a decent train back then i had my reasons as my grandma i lived with would never let me out to se them.
Now that you say work.. i mad up an excuse to my boss that i'd be late to work on tuesday just so i could get 2MP5 with NR45/NR52/DL42 and 2MP9 with G512/G511/CLF6/45s1/442s1 the main thing i wanted was 2MP9 i arrived at work afterwards he didn't say anything and then he gave me hours today to make up my loss
So can't complain!

Back when I was at school, any excuse to not go was as good as any.

That's true, just the thought of a cough was enough of an excuse for me.
I will never forget my mother's words though, "Your school fees cost us an absolute fortune. If you ever wag a day of school, you will go to the local State School."
With that comment/threat in mind, I never even considered wagging school for any reason, let alone chase a train!

Back in Year 12 in 1989, one day I decided to skip school. I got ready as usual, however underneath my uniform I wore my casual clothes, made a point of saying goodbye to mum and off I trotted.
I got a couple streets away and to a residents amusement, peeled off my school layer to reveal my casual wear. I then caught the train into Spencer Street and purchased a FIRST class return ticket to Geelong !
The V/Line assistant questioned why I wanted a first class return to Geelong seeing as it was only approx 55min each way. I stumbled for words but told him something along the line that I wanted to go in comfort !
Needless to say I had quite a lovely First class gunzelling day in Geelong.
On my return, I got back to the same street and put my school uniform back over my casual clothes. I then made a point of saying hello to mum and felt guilty for 5 years before fessing up !

I could watch trains going around the Ekka Loop/Normanby if class was in the new building. I can remember wondering what these trains with yellow doors were in 1999 when the SMU 220 entered service.

Way back in 1954 a mate and myself wagged school to watch a coal train going around "the cape" from from the Zig Zag at Lithgow.
A standard goods engine leading with two 57 or 58 class engines and a standard goods engine at the rear.
No camera or tape recorder.
Something worth seeing.

As this is a hobby, no. I wouldn't skip work or (when I went) school for what is a hobby. That's akin to those kids who skip school to play their World of Warcrafts.
However, I frequently ask my boss a month or so in advance if I can have a certain day off due to chasing a heritage train. I wouldn't do it after she has released the roster though, as shift swaps result in confusion amongst us and mess up the payroll, etc.
