What are you saying? State schools are inferior to private schools?
I went to a Private school in Townsville and a State High school here, And I believe I got a better education at the SHS than I did at the private school.
Perhaps you should have gone to the state school because you might have hardened the f*** up and wouldn't be such a wussy boy now.
Anyway, No I never did have a day off school to take photos but in my senior years I did have alot of spares and Tuesdays we had a day off. I would make the use of these days for photography.

Years ago I had accidentally stuffed up my rosters and ended up having to take a sickie so I could spend a Friday firing at PBR. I expected to find peace and quiet when I got there at 6am but instead there were a fair few people around and the Climax loco was also being fired up. Turned out that Clive Robertson (who used to have a 9.30pm news type show - and is a bit of a rail nut) was coming up for a days filming. Normally I'll try and get on a camera any chance I can get but this particular day I spent every minute ducking and weaving as soon as I saw the camera on. As it turned out, the segment didn't go to air until about 6 weeks later and for all the people at work may have known, it could have been filmed on a weekend!!!
My pics here - and the Forsayth Goods here!

Last year when the 620 class had its farewell in Newcastle I put in for a flexi day then they changed the date for its final run. No problem I had another up my sleeve and actually got a seat on it after pestering the right people.
Other than that I only have to walk 50 metres to see everything that goes past on "The Short North" when I am at work. And if I miss seeing it you can hear it.

Never skipped school to chase trains, but did leave early 2 or 3 times a week to catch a train home rather than the bus. Mind you, I was usually allowed to leave early on certain days in year 12, so it caused no problems. Basically it was optional to stay. Unfortunately one one of those days I was allowed to leave early, I was just stepping out the door when a teacher called me back to help with something. It was a mixed blessing as the train I'd have caught was the last run of L 1163. It derailed at speed near Drouin about 25 minutes later.
At primary school in 1977-8 I could see the main western line at Gerang Gerung. Didn't need to chase the trains (well, my pushbike wasn't fast enough). But got to see all those lovely VR blue and gold locos and the Walker railmotor pass by the classroom windows.
C505 at Gerang Gerung.

Was that the most obvious conclusion? Your post reads as though you're quite self-conscious and not terribly secure about who are are.
Would "We are paying $8,000/year for you to learn, not to wag school" have been a more obvious conclusion? I think so. Perhaps I should have made such an obvious conclusion more clear.
I would be royally pissed off if I was paying $215/week for my child to learn at school and they were wagging to chase trains! Wouldn't you?

I use to skip "Boring Classes" at TAFE sometime to go watch trains. At Work as I work near a Rail Line if I wanna go photographing I just go take my Lunch break to photograph the Long Island Steel train for example double headed PN Livery BLs on it I did that

Never wagged school to chase trains, but caught out one day where I worked first, took a day off sick to ride a special train and the TV stations covered it, guess who's ugly mug got shown in close up. Oh well did not get fired from that!
I must have been lucky later on in life though my last boss who was also a close friend of my late fathers, was a railway enthusiast and actually got me really interested in railways etc. Well we were working near the railway line at the time at a private residence and a special steam train was going to come along there, and I said about 5 minutes before it was due that I was just going to nip down to the tracks and get a quick photo of it, he then turned to me and said I will come with you, so we downed tools went for the short walk got the photo's and returned to work as if nothing had happened! We did the same on it's return run too!
We did this a couple of times over the years and I was his apprentice at the time!

No Michael, I'm not insecure about myself, I'm just saying the way you worded your post came across as if you had a very snobbish supremist attitude towards state schools. Perhaps instead of boasting you went to some private school in town you could have said simply, "No, I never wagged school" instead of blowing your own trumpet like you usually do.

James, I refer you to my original post. The section that is of most interest to you reads thus, "I never skipped high school to chase a train and certainly would not miss University or call in sick at work!"
http://www.railpage.com.au/f-p1028054.htm#1028054
I created this thread because I did not ever wag school to chase or ride a train and think that one's education is far more important.

Back on topic, buddy! | Guss, nothing read in MJ's post implied any snobbery towards Government Schools from Private schools.
And was the personal attacks (All of which unwarranted) really necessary? All you've done is imply all Private School goers are wusses. Some cowardly behaviour really
And for the record, I did go to a Private School between Yr3-Yr10 before going to a State one for my senior years, and got a better education because of it.

Rightio...
Didn't need to jig school in my later years, when considering my school was literally adjacent to the Main West lines at St Marys
Joy it was, having 4 classes with 180 degree views of the running lines and seeing everything pass by you during Physics, Maths, English or Photography! Speaking of which, free periods between classes were great to head out to the field and do some 'homework' (For Photography of course ).
On two occasions, I asked to take a stroll out of a Physics and Photography Class as I had to 'see my english teacher to go through a draft essay', and went out onto the field to photograph the last ever Great South Pacific Express passing through, and on another occasion, an RTM special.
As for Uni, there was really nothing of interest to skip a class for, considering my old uni (UTS) was up the road from Central Station. The only occasion I could think of was going to one Tutorial 30mins late having gone to Central to watch an RTM train depart on its way around the state.
With my present Uni, it's just too far out of town to really bother with, and there generally isn't much to be had during the day.
Cheers
