Hi all
I'm just curious as to know what loco-hauled trains ran in the different states of Australia between the 1960s to now. I'd like the details of what motive power they used, the name of the train, what route it travelled, how many carriages the train consisted of, and what types of carriages were they (I don't know much about carriage codes) so could you please post the carriage code and what type of carriage it is (for example, first class sleeping car, dining car, etc) Also, a pic or two of the train would be much appreciated.

There would be at least a city phone book size document needed to answer that question.

Just of the top of my head in NSW some of the major ones were
The Brisbane Limited Express (Sydney-Brisbane)
The Brisbane Express (Sydney-South Brisbane or Sydney-Wallangarra on alternate days) this later became the Gold Coast and later the Pacific Coast Motorail (Sydney-Murwillumbah)
The Southern Aurora (Sydney-Melbourne)
The Spirit of Progress (Sydney-Melbourne)
The Intercapital Daylight (Sydney-Melbourne)
The Central West Express (Sydney-Orange)
The Western Mail (Sydney-Dubbo/Forbes)
The South Mail (not sure)
The Riverina Express (was this loco hauled)
The Glen Innes Mail/The Northern Mail (Sydney-Glen Innes and later Tenterfield)
Northwest Mail (Sydney-Moree?)
The North Coast Mail which later became the North Coast Overnight Express
The Newcastle Flyer (Sydney-Newcastle)
The South Coast Daylight (Sydney-Nowra)
The Cooma Mail and I think that there may have even been a Kosiosko Ski Express
In the 1990s The Canberra Express
The North Coast Daylight Express
I think that some Newcastle suburban trains may have even been loco hauled and until about 1989 quite a few interurban trains were loco hauled many of which had Supplementary Interurban carriages.

Bring Karlsruhe Tramtrains to Australian cities
Extend the proposed Metro to Taylor Square
Extend the Gold Coast line to the Tweed

Excellent list so far - I'll add:
- The Sydney/Melbourne Express's (essentially the Southern Aroura with a different name)
- The IP (Sydney-Perth, still going)
- The Alice (Short-lived, Sydney to Alice Springs via Adelaide)
As for the Riverina Express, wasn't that done by the Tulloch railcars that were later demotored and used (loco hauled) on Sydney-Bomaderry trains?

The Ghan, IP and Overland are hauled by NR's, with sleeping cars, sitting cars and some motorail? currently.
The Tasman Ltd. was hauled by X's (the 1st mainline diesel in Australia).

The Overland (Melbourne - Adelaide)
1960's to 80's Mainly Vic S, B, X and SAR 930,s?
Late 80's Early 90's Vic N class,
Early 90's AN CLP's
Mid 90's till now NR, also seen pics of a BL hauling it.
Not my video, but at the 4:30 mark you can see 2 X's hauling the Overland

In Queensland we have:
Sunlander with Queenslander class to Cairns
Spirit of the Outback to Longreach
Westlander to Charleville ( I think it was called the "Western Mail" before being renamed the Westlander in the early 50s.)
Inlander to Mt Isa
In the past we've had
Spirit of the Tropics (Only went as far as Townsville I think)
Queenslander (Was a separate train from the Sunlander at one time)
Sunshine Rail Experience to Rockhampton
Special Tourist Operations:
Winelander to Stanthorpe and Wallangarra ( It did go to Kingaroy before that line was closed).
Cairns-Kuranda Tourist Railway ( If you've seen pictures of the train heading over a bridge past a waterfall, that is the Kuranda train).
I'm sure there has been others, but those are the ones that I'm familiar with.

No, the ones that run/ran in revenue service.
Collhad, yes, the Spirit of the Tropics ran to Townsville (was replaced with a Townsville terminating Sunlander). Other QLD trains we've had were the Midlander (Rockhamton - Winton, replaced by the Spirit of the Outback in 1993) The Capricornian (Brisbane - Rockhampton. I saw on one of my videos it had a number of QLX wagons in tow, would these be used to carry mail and perishables?) Was replaced by the Spirit of Capricorn (using ICE trains), which was replaced by the Tilt train.
Where did the Sunshine Rail Experience originate? I thought it ran from Rockhampton to Proserpine or something?

I think that there was also the Sydney Mail which ran until early 1972 and the Dirranbandi Mail ran until 1993.
Brisbane also had loco hauled suburban trains until about 1999 and many of the trains to Southport, Tweed Heads, Beaudesert, the Brisbane Valley etc were local hauled.

Victoria had the Sunraysia and some other train that ran between Melbourne and Mildura at least one ran overnight and included sleepers and possibly a club car.
Victoria also had the privately operated West Coast Railway between Melbourne and Warnambool and Hoys Roadlines trains between I think Mebourne and Sheparton. The Hoys train however used Vline rollingstock.
Many of Vlines trains are still loco hauled consisting of either N or H sets. The Frankston to Stony Point suburban train in Melbourne is still loco hauled at present.

I think they both existed - the Sunraysia was the day train, the other the nightime. The Vinelander was killed first.

What about South Australia?
I know that it had the Broken Hill express which was partly operated by the SAR and partly operated by the Silverton tramway?
