The weather in thomastown is bad, trees broken on roads, branches flying everywhere, electricity is out.

Lucky to get electricity in this part of town!
But lots of branches knocked down and police guiding some traffic intersections.
Connex and Metlink sites still down.
...expect South Kensington

Have just seen Station Street in Fairfield, what a mess. All shops closed, no power, trees down across the road in multiple places, the rood on my favourite cafe damaged.
Fairfield railway station is operating. Trains moving through, not sure about delays

CH9 430 weather/news said that the POLICE are asking for ALL non essential people to get out of the City as soon as possible.
Supposedly the worst is still to come including HAIL and more winds plus another dust storm soon.

How could this be accomplished. I just got off the telephone from a friend who is in their car and has been sitting on St Kilda road for 1 hour having moved less than 100 metres.
It would also appear trams are heavily delayed on the southern routes out of town.
Glad I worked from home today.
Regards.

Noticed a Siemens set run Bang Road over the Park Road crossing towards the city at 4.00pm ish desto was Frankston. Gates were down at Mentone (Belcombe Road), Cheltenham (Carman Road) and many cars awaiting at Park Road.

Seems that all services on the Lilydale and Belgrave line were cancelled. Arrived @ Richmond just after 3PM where we were told all Glen Waverley trains were cancelled. Another announcement told us that LIL/BEL have been suspended and to WALK to Camberwell.
Also saw on Metlink all Epping/Hurstbridge trains have also been suspended.

I was at Camberwell Station around 5pm and there was crowded. I had wait for 40 minutes, no replacement bus comes.
An inspector then told us that we had to take 109 tram to Box Hill and there will be alternative transport.
Why they didn't just letting passengers knew if there was an incident in each station? If i would have to get to Box Hill from Camberwell, i would rather just take bus from city.
Even in Box Hill, the replacement buses wasn't enough as people are keep coming. Some passengers suggested that inspectors should ask passengers to queue up when waiting for a replacement bus. Otherwise peoples at the back keep pushing to get on the bus quicker.

Around 4pm no Wattle Park trams were proceeding past Camberwell Junction, angering many... but hardly YT's fault.
Lights were out in the junction - Route 75 trams seemed to be running as usual (though delayed) and quite packed.
Trains down between C'well and Alamein, and C'well and Box Hill.
Saw a Route 75 tram running along Burwood Hwy at Elgar Rd about 7:30pm quite packed - crowding that I'd normally associate with CBD services at 5:30pm.
V/Line told 774 around 8pm that they took the necessary steps and had a "fleet" of buses on standby at Southern Cross today.
How were the affected?
Perhaps Connex should look at acquiring up to 15buses to employ during cancellations/disruption. There is the risk the buses could be left idle at times, but given bus replacements are fairly regular on weekends, the fleet would be used quite reguarly.

These situations are always grief when mass movement of people are concerned.
I can recall the day the insulator broke nearby Highett and 18 up trains, all loaded to the gunnells, were stranded. It took three hours to find the broken insulator, and by then, nearly everyone had either gone home or found some other way to get to work, sans buses, for this was in the days before bustitution was even thought of.
We have come a long way since then in terms of delivering a service to the public at large.
People become comfortably reliant on public transport, when they should always have some alternative strategies mapped out in the back of their heads to fall back on, should the worst occur, i.e., no trains.

Well after leaving the office just after 5pm, I come out of lift, pass through the barriers and then I find it's puring with rain, so I agreed to meet some friends at Flinders Street as we were going to travel as a group.
I get to Flinders Street after noticing South bound trams backed up from Flinders right uo to Bourke St. Flinders Street station was not as busy as I was expecting it to be.
After meeting up with the others we got the 17.41 Frankston, which left Flinders Street at about 18.05
Before I left the office I called Frankston station as I have them on speed dial and asked them what type of delays I would be expecting, and they said that the trains were terminating at Cheltenham and that buses would run from Cheltenham to Frankston.
Stopping at the loop stations was not as bad as thought, with normal crowds at the stations and the train overal was packed as it would have been if there were slight delays, so it was nothing out of the ordinary really.
Our driver when we got to Calfield after crawling all the way from South Yarra and stopping all stations said that because of the delays we would be terminating at Cheltenham, or if we were lucky would terminate at Mordialloc. But when we got to Ormond he notified us that the delay had been cleared and we would run to Frankston.
At Cheltenham there was a Siemens train sitting in platform 1 and when we got to Mentone there was no power the station and 3 of the light poles on platform 2 were leaning over and there was a big pile of firewood where a tree came down on the tracks.
Then from there the only other noticeable problems were power outages at Edithvale, traffic lights out at Carrum and the boom gates were stuck down with Police in attendance and there was partial power out at Seaford. At Frankston there was a 6 car Comeng stabled 2 tracks from the platform 2 track and the PIDS displayed 'listen for announcments'.

I saw the late-peak end of this from several places: Melbourne Central, where the PID screens for platform 2 were blank and people were relying on (frequent) announcements about their trains; at South Yarra where a Siemens trains sat idle and powered-down in platform 6, and a station attendant directed people to platforms as the entrace PID was also out. Amusing here was his advice on which platform to catch a Flinders Street train from: "wait at the top of the platform 3 ramp, and if one comes first on platform 1, RUN!"
And then to Richmond, where I was trying to catch a train to East Richmond (but obviously could have walked if necessary). This announcement floored me:
"Please note that all Glen Waverley line services have been suspended until further notice. Passengers should make alternative transport arrangements."
Now, call me crazy, but at 8pm on a rainy night at Richmond station, suppose you had to get home to, say, Syndal or Glen Waverley. "Alternative transport"? There isn't any! Basically, you'd be sleeping at the station.
Any reason Glen Waverley didn't get bustitution?
Kudos though to whoever decided to run Lilydale/Belgrave trains altered to stop at East Richmond, even modifying the PIDs to say so (but not the on-board ones ) It was greatly appreciated, as East Richmond so often seems like an afterthought.

So do we know what time Glen Waverley trains finally started to run? Or are they still not running? I noticed that they stopped running at about 2pm today.

I am seldom grateful for having to work for a living.
Tonight after all the chaos I am sitting in a 5* hotel in the City at the employer's expense.
Having been asked to work virtually as double shift today and likely the some again tomorrow I asked what arrangements they were making for my transport to and from home.
The hotel (inclusive of meals, minibar, etc) was thought to be cheaper than two taxi fares so here I am.
Access to Connex' website has ben very limited account the abnormally high hit level and they have only been ableto provide limited information. In fairness things changed rapidly mid-afternoon as the weather worsened btu also some delays cleared.
The advice for non-essential people to go home might have been sound in theory but conflicted with the messages of road closures and transport at a virtual standstill. Never mind, we live to see another day and the forecast is much better tomorrow.
