Group lobbies for Daylesford to Woodend railway line to be reopened
BY ROBERT SOMERS

DAYLESFORD'S newly formed Light Rail Action Group wants to reopen the line to Woodend.
But a Daylesford rail preservation group says the idea is unlikely to ever happen.
David Goldman, a volunteer at the Daylesford Regional Visitor Information Centre, wants more public support for his idea, which he believes is the answer to soaring fuel costs.
Mr Goldman said his idea started when scores of people quizzed volunteers at the information centre about commuting to the area
"People don't want to drive anymore. They are asking if they can get here by train," he said.
Mr Goldman said rising travelling costs were a long-term threat to the shire's tourism industry.
"We have many backpackers and people from all walks of life say to us . . . this is one thing that needs drastic decisions to keep the tourism industry alive," he said.
Mr Goldman recalled his 1940s trips to the shire from Spencer St Station to Woodend and then via railmotor on the branchline to Daylesford.
"We have come full circle and with petrol prices sky rocketing at an alarming rate now is the time to get people back to the railway system," he said.
Meanwhile Ian Fell, president of the Central Highlands Tourist Railway, which runs the Spa Country Railway from Daylesford to Bullarto, said he supported the idea but financial backing would forever burden any rail plan.
"It would be absolutely fantastic to have the railway re-opened, but it is extremely unlikely for any government to invest the millions of dollars needed to even think about it," he said. |

This was on the front of the local newspaper today. I am sure the anti regional development people on these forums will shoot it down.

What's wrong with a bus?
We don't even have rail to South Morang and people want to waste money pushing it to nowhere.

I'd be inclined to agree with ZH836301. If they want rail to Woodend, DSCR should reopen to Carlsrhue (which would be a hefty effort on its own) and have a VGR style setup (There ain't no way in hell they could be able to make it to Woodend unless a 3rd track was laid. V/Line would have them dragged to the street and shot if they asked to use the main.)

Parkes Hub yeah it did not take the anti V/Line mob to show up did it but i think ZH is more than likely just trying to get another flame war going as it is a pattern of his.

My point is simply this; Daylesford isn't exactly the population centre of Victoria, This bloke wants rail to Daylesford for Tourists. Not because the people of Daylesford need reliable PT to get to the major towns, not because they need to get to work, but to gain more of a tourist base, which is why I suggested extending the DSCR.
It helps rail preservation, the tourist scene in Daylesford and gets what they want.. Rail with a connection to V/Line services.
Reality is that there is approx. 1023284101293 other PT problems that Victoria faces at the moment.

Whats the population of Daylesford, and how is it expected to grow/decline in coming years?
It's something that should be looked at - maybe not to be done in the next 2 years, but in the next decade...

Let me get this straight.
You want to build the East-West road tunnel AND take rail to Daylesford? I'll scream if you mention the Red Hill Line.
Do you honestly have any idea?

Actually, I don't think this is a bad idea. I can see real merit in planning for a returned v/line service to Daylesford. The real question in my mind is why not run the service from Ballarat? The line was shorter in that direction and can meet with Ballarat trains. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Red Hill line should be extended to Rosebud and Sorrento.
Shame, VR, Shame.

FWIW, I would keep Daylesford for the future but it is certainly nowhere near a high priority right now.
Red Hill, on the other hand, is next to useless.
