A few weeks back I heard about a Hitachi transfer from Newport to Ballarat via North Geelong, but it ended up not happening. Another ran this morning, supposed to leave Newport about 0745 but it left much later.

The full set of photos is here:
http://wongm.fotopic.net/c1570948.html

I was waiting outside Lara since 0730 or so, by 0900 I gave up and went up to the station for a squiz at the works there. I heard the horn and it came though at 0920:

I went to Moorabool when I intended to get a shot of it coming up the valley from North Geelong, when I arrived the up signal flicked to orange, then back to red. I thought I might have missed the transfer, so pressed on to Gheringhap, as there is a down signal to check. After about 5 minutes it cleared, and the train appeared about 0950:

It went though Bannockburn at 1006:

It was only doing 50 km/h or so, so it was easy to chase down:

Lethbridge was about 1019:

The next stretch of the Midland Highway has a lot of little side roads, and the railway is close by:

Departing Meredith was about 1044:

Still more side roads to duck into:

Elaine was reached at 1051, and the midland Highway traffic was stopped for a change...

The Blue Bridge is just before the line goes into the forest:

Then I ducked back to the highway, then back east to the railway at Lal Lal:

The road runs parallel to Yendon where it changes sides:

And continues to Navigators:

Then road and rail split, I gave up at Warrenheip rather than go into town:

I did some video as well that I will put on Youtube soon, but the battery got low, and I bumped into another forum member who has a real video camera, and so should have some better footage up at some point. Wink

Why is there a T still in VR livery? Has it not been repainted for 30 or so years or was it restored?

Also where was the Hitachi going? To be refurbished?

It belongs to a preservation group, SRHC to be exact.

Trust me, it'd be a miracle to have paintwork look that amazing and pristine after 30+ years! Shocked Definitely restored, very, very well I might add!

They're usually taken up to Ballarat North. (And not usually the back way via Geelong! Evil or Very Mad )

At Navigators you can see me on top of the overpass. Smile

I got some video at Gheringhap and Bannockburn as well, before I caught up with TheRev and his proper camera and mike:
