And dare I mention the disembarking technique of young gentlemen on Manly ferries before the advent of huge hydraulic gangways and gates?

We didn't have gangways; we had gangplanks. These were narrow and only had a railing on one side. The deckhands would just casually throw them across the gap - two side by side if it was busy (to make a kind of safer thing with two railings), but often just one. Young gentlemen did not wait for the deckhand to do this. The leap of faith was the preferred method. I was a bit young to have the cajones to try this though.

A tulloch to SETS would be good if they are allowed to run a set with NON powered doors.

Some did, some didn't. The ones that ran in S sets or W sets, trains with power operated doors, were naturally also power operated. The ones that ran with "standard" electric cars, the original M sets, had manual doors to match the motor cars. I believe some of the Tulloch trailers were converted one way or the other during their careers. I doubt it would be too hard to do the same conversion again today if you wanted to.

Under today's safety considerations, you wouldn't get such a proposal past the "starting gate". In any case, the significant reason for preservation of the Tulloch double deck trailers has been to acknowledge their contribution to the provision of additional seating on Sydney's electric trains. {I rode in T4802 on its first day in service back in March 1964 - T4801 was at the other end of the same train). Each Tulloch double deck trailer carried 278 passengers - 132 seated, 146 standing. Compare then existing single deck trailers with (nominal) 212 total passengers - 72 seated, 140 standing.

The other reason for the allocation of most of the Tulloch double deck trailers to non-powered door trains was to eliminate the majority of the remaining wooden electric trailers. The allocation of 80 manual-door Tulloch double-deck trailers, together with the conversion of the 40 Sputnik trailers to manual-door status, achieved that goal.

In 1965, M sets 1-20 and B sets 1-20 were each allocated a nominal pair of manual-door Tulloch double deck trailers. All Tulloch double deck trailers numbered between T4801 and T4895, at one stage or another, had powered doors. Tulloch double deck trailers numbered from T4896 to T4920 never had powered doors.

One might propose that single deck Sputnik trailer T4790 might be rewired to its original 120-volt dc control system, returned to power-door status and renumbered back to T4740, and placed in W1 set to replace T4814. That would allow the public to view the impact of double deck cars over single deck vehicles by providing that comparison between the last single deck car, T4740 (commissioned, 1960) and the first double deck car, T4801 (commissioned, 1964). How's that for an idea?

But the Tullochs are unlikely to be run any time soon. The railways won't allow the F set to run and there are ddifficulties in getting the W set to run because it doesn't have some of the saftey features newer trains have such as Villagence control.

From my understanding, Dorrigo has T4844 and T4843 whilst Sets has T4799, T4840, T4854, T4874 and T4881. T4877 and T4847 were sent to Petersham. There are another 5 cars which were saved from scrapping T4825? from the original zoo train, T4864, T4849 and T4850 and T4857. These I believe are being used for fire training.

Can anyone pleaser confirm whether SETS actually obtained these cars? I recall hearing (or reading) that SETS failed to make the required payment to RailCorp.

The original Zoo train was a single deck set.

Only one manual-door double-deck Tulloch trailer, T4916, was sold; the others, T4896 - T4915 & T4917 - T4920, were scrapped.

A suburban driver told me this afternoon that these 2 cars have been replaced with a 2 car interurban V set.
Does anyone have details on which ones they are
Question

On SETS - do they actually do anything these days? Or did they collapse under the insurmountable combined weight of factional infighting (what a rare occurence in NSW rail preservation circles Rolling Eyes ) and stiffer safety standards?

Workmen are constructing several tracks with concrete sleepers behind the collage. What will this track be used for?

Went past there today and noted the 2 interurban cars involved are DIM 8020 (ex 8067) & DMT 9204. Cool

Now that didn't take long. Security needs to be stepped up at Petersham - those paint jobs are happening all to frequently. Wink (I get what you mean - well I'm pretty sure I do)
