Hi all,
I read in the November 1995 issue of Rail Digest and a recent Motive Power issue that they are proposing a standard gauge railway between Melbourne and Brisbane. Can anyone shed some light on this? Particularly the NSW section of it.

Cheers John

This would be the Australian Inland Rail Expressway's (AIRE) proposed Melbourne-Darwin rail link. Been on the board for quite a few years, but just never quite goes below the horizon. Opinion seems to be polarized between it being the best thing that will ever happen to Australian railways, and a laughable pipe dream that will never come to fruition.

Hey, it may wel happen. Just like the Maldon to Dombarton line.

It may even happen within four decades, but no garuantees.

ARTC have just called for expressions of interest to conduct the alignment study along the far western sub-corridor, basically Junee-Parkes-Dubbo-Moree-Goondiwindi-Toowoomba-Brisbane, with upgrade of the Goulburn Valley and Tocumwal-Narranderra -Junee contemplated. Have a look at their website.

Also, try this lengthy thread on it. I suggest this thread be locked and all discussion be moved to the linked thread. From my google search it seems we have quite a few disjointed threads on this topic Sad
