Good evening.

I recenly was within earshot of some suits in the city who were talking about "what to do with Victrack." I don't know who these people were but I was close to Spring Street.

Now let me make clear that I did not hear of any specific Government plans only that there was a "consideration" of merging Victrack with Vicroads with the general argument being that "Vicroads has a recent history and experience with major projects."

If this was to be on the cards (I just heard it was a reccomendation/consideration) would people think it a good idea? Would Vicroads kill Rail or champion it as they do roads?

I never even thought of Victrack being the Rail equal of Victroads...but I guess they are...

How are they? What was the last time you saw Victrack doing any planning for rail lines, or doing any maintenance of any track?

As far as I know all they do is own all of Victoria's rail infrastructure and lease it to operators such as Connex and V/Line Network Access, and formerly Pacific National/Freight Australia.

Thats what I thought, but this conversation made me think otherwise. It was quite clear and definite what they were talking about and the reasons why.

There is an opportunity to the knowledge bank within Vicroads with regard to planning, development and management of major projects. This is something that has been sadly lacking from the PT division of the DOI and its predecessors.

However, the danger is that the overall direction of any combined organisation could be swayed too far towards the roads lobby. On the other hand, it could well dissipate the roads lobby as the RACV would no longer have a government department aimed solely at road building to side with/lobby to.

A curly one indeed.

People who talk out their asre usually have bad breath.
